For the past few weeks in Las Vegas, trainer Ruben Guerrero has been playing his role in NUVOtv’s new reality series “Knockout”.

During that time, Guerrero has fielded a volley of questions from reporters regarding his time on the show, his feud with fellow trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., and everything in between.

Curious for some updates on his son Robert, I asked Guerrero how confident he was that he would be able to rise to the championship ranks again in the wake of his decision loss to Floyd Mayweather this past May.

“I’m very confident in my son,” said Guerrero. “I’ve been training him since he was small and I know what he can do. And that one loss wasn’t supposed to be a loss, because that guy didn’t stay toe to toe with my son; he came to run.

“He came to get a payday,” Guerrero added, continuing to target Mayweather. “He didn’t want to take a chance. He came to get paid. That was it. He said ‘toe to toe’ and he didn’t go toe to toe. And you know what? I’m the kind of man, I back up my word. If I say I’m going toe to toe, I’m going to do it.”

Following the Guerrero victory, Mayweather returned four months later to pitch a virtuoso display in routing Saul Alvarez over the course of twelve rounds.

I asked Guerrero what he thought of Floyd’s effort that night.

“He stood in front of Canelo,” said Guerrero. “He wasn’t scared of Canelo. He’s scared of my son. If he’s a big man about it, he can do a rematch with my son. This time we’re going to train inside of chicken coop with hens and we’re going to catch him. And once we catch those hens, then we’re ready to take him on if he gives us a rematch.”

As noted in our previous post, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is pleased with all aspects of the April 12 rematch between WBO welterweight titlist Tim Bradley and eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao.

What I also personally find interesting about the fight is just how much attention Juan Manuel Marquez will be giving to the match.

According to Arum, the Mexico City legend has expressed interest in facing the Pacquiao-Bradley II winner in an effort to land himself a belt in a fifth weight class.

“There seems no reason for him to fight [Ruslan] Provodnikov,” Arum said, referencing the Russian star who had called out Marquez.

“Marquez really wants only one thing before he retires,” Arum continued. “He wants to win that title. And he has indicated to us that he would be very available to fight the winner of Pacquiao and Bradley in the fall.”

Marquez lost a split-decision to Bradley this past October and ten months prior he scored his lone victory over Pacquiao with a devastating sixth round knockout in their fourth encounter.

Marquez had vehemently opposed a fifth meeting with Pacquiao in the past but now seems to have a different mindset.

“That is correct, so he’s obviously changed his tune,” Arum stated. “He doesn’t want to face Pacquiao again if Pacquiao is not successful with Bradley. But if Pacquiao is successful with Bradley, he has stated that he wants to face Pacquiao.”

According to a report from Luke Furman at BoxingScene.com, negotiations appear to be in place to stage a match between junior middleweight contenders James Kirkland (32-1, 28 KO’s) and Damian Jonak (37-0-1, 21 KO’s).

The plan is to put the fight as the co-feature to Gennady Golovkin’s April 26th return to HBO inside of The Theater in Madison Square Garden. Kirkland is coming off of a big win over Glen Tapia and could use another HBO showcase to spearhead him towards something bigger later this year.
