Robert Garcia training in Oxnard, Calif. (Photo: www.HustleBoss.com)
By Chris Robinson
Recently it was revealed that Freddie Roach had won his sixth Trainer of the Year Award by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
There are many in the sport that feel that the award should have instead went to former world champion Robert Garcia for the work he put in out of his personal facility in Oxnard, Calif.
Catching up with Garcia during a recent swing through Southern California, he shared his view with us of why he wasn’t upset at all to not get the vote.
“You know what? I thought it was more legit but what I’ve learned is that it’s all politics,” Garcia explained. “It’s all politics and if they didn’t choose me, something’s wrong. Because what Mikey [Garcia] did, what Evgeny Gradovich did, especially the win with [Marcos] Maidana.
“Who else did what I did?” Garcia asked. “Four champions in one year. Nobody else did that.”
Garcia continued to speak his mind, insisting that other high-level trainers surpassed what Roach did last year.
“And I honestly believe there’s other trainers like Mayweather, like Joel Diaz, Abel Sanchez, who did more than Freddie Roach,” Garcia stated. “And I’m not hating on Freddie Roach. I’m not talking sh*t. But that award, to me, doesn’t mean anything anymore.”

For the past few years we’ve had the chance to cover budding lightweight Lydell Rhodes (19-0, 9 KO’s) in and out of the ring around the Las Vegas scene.
A comedian while not in training, Rhodes possesses some serious talent and is one of the quickest prospects in the city.
The latest news with the 26-year old Rhodes is that he will be serving as a chief sparring partner to eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao in advance of his April 12 rematch on HBO pay per view against Tim Bradley.
Rhodes confirmed the news with HustleBoss.com on Tuesday afternoon and was able to meet up with us inside of the South Point Casino to speak further on some of the details.

During press stops in Los Angeles and New York last week, WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley and eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao hosted the media ahead of their April 12 rematch on HBO pay per view.
Bradley always makes for a great interview and he wasted little time in stating his belief that Pacquiao has lost his killer instinct in the wake of his tactical points victory over Brandon Rios this past November.
During a recent swing through the Mayweather Boxing Club, trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. seemed to share Bradley’s sentiments that Pacquiao hasn’t fully bounced back from his knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez nearly one year prior to the Rios match.
“I can agree with that too,” Mayweather Sr. stated. “Anytime you get stretched like that, you’re out for five to seven, eight minutes. Man, you get knocked out like that, that’s a serious, cold knockout. It’s going to be hard for him to come back behind that.”

The next opponent for Floyd Mayweather has yet to officially be announced.
At the moment both Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana see their names in the headlines on a constant basis due to their roles as Mayweather’s possible next foes.
Catching up with Maidana’s stable mate Brandon Rios during a recent swing through the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, Calif., he revealed why his Argentinean friend is the more ideal choice for Mayweather.
“I think Maidana is more interesting than Amir Khan because of the fact that Maidana comes to fight and he’s going to be on Floyd, breathing down his chest,” Rios stated.

As he heads into his pivotal rematch with WBO welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley, Manny Pacquiao and his team seem content with how things have been playing out.
This past week, with stops in Los Angeles and New York, Pacquiao was able to come face to face with Bradley, the man who beat him by way of controversial split-decision in June of 2012.
And while the respect between both sides has been evident, there is also a very deep confidence that is easy to spot from all parties involved.
For Bradley this is his self-proclaimed shot at redemption while the 35-year old Pacquiao will look to build from the momentum of his comeback victory over Brandon Rios this past November in Macau, China.
For the Rios fight, Pacquiao spent a huge portion of his camp in his native General Santos City, Philippines.
This time around, however, trainer Freddie Roach will be looking to spend the final weeks working out of his Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles, Calif.
“I’m going to arrive from China after [Zou] Shiming’s fight and we’re going to spend a couple weeks in the Philippines,” Roach stated during a recent roundtable with the press.
Roach is targeting a March 1 return to Los Angeles and is confident that being locked down from nearly six weeks will be more than enough time to hone Pacquiao’s skills.
“Plenty, yes,” said Roach.
