The next opponent for Floyd Mayweather has yet to officially be announced.
At the moment both Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana see their names in the headlines on a constant basis due to their roles as Mayweather’s possible next foes.
Catching up with Maidana’s stable mate Brandon Rios during a recent swing through the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, Calif., he revealed why his Argentinean friend is the more ideal choice for Mayweather.
“I think Maidana is more interesting than Amir Khan because of the fact that Maidana comes to fight and he’s going to be on Floyd, breathing down his chest,” Rios stated.
Maidana’s stock is as high as ever following his entertaining upset over Adrien Broner in San Antonio this past December that netted him the WBA welterweight championship of the world.
Maidana dropped Broner twice in a wild fight as he marched towards a clear unanimous decision victory and Rios tipped his hat to ‘Chino’.
“Like he did to Broner,” said Rios. “And everybody thought Broner was the next Floyd and Maidana shut that out of the water. I think it will be a great fight; him and Maidana.”
Rios sees a completely different scenario if Khan were to land the fight, however.
“Floyd would catch him eventually,” Rios explained. “Floyd’s one of the best technicians out of all. He’s very smart and I think Floyd would tag him a couple times and I think Floyd might even drop Amir Khan.”
Rios isn’t buying into the notion that the British star’s range and speed could present Floyd with a look he isn’t familiar with.
“I don’t think so,” Rios stated. “Because sometimes Amir Khan, he steps on his own toes sometimes. He comes in too quick. He’s too quick, too aggressive, and sometimes he leaves himself open when he throws a lot of punches.
“He’s very fast, yes, I give Amir Khan that, but sometimes he’ll jump in and Mayweather’s one of the best counter punchers,” Rios added. “One of the best boxers out there and I think he’ll catch him with something.”
