Having a first account of his actions when crude brawler Marcos Maidana first began training at Robert Garcia’s gym in Oxnard, Calif., I could tell how much of a transition the Argentinean was in for.

Maidana (33-3, 30 KO’s) was coming off of a humbling decision loss to Devon Alexander months prior and had enlisted the services of Garcia in hopes of retooling himself as he eyed another title run.

A little over a year later and Maidana is a few days away from another pivotal test, as he will be meeting up with well-seasoned Josesito Lopez (31-1, 18 KO’s) this weekend in a Showtime-televised clash in Carson.

Speaking with Garcia during Wednesday’s media day, we touched on a few storylines, including Maidana’s focus in camp, his memorable sparring sessions with his stable mate Brandon Rios, the challenge Rios faces with his November 23rd clash with Manny Pacquiao, and more.

Speaking with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum on Tuesday evening, he insists that we will likely see something special in four months’ time.

Throughout his eight-year career, former lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios has displayed intangibles that have helped to make him one of the hottest names in the sport of boxing.

A rock-solid chin, debilitating body attack, and relentless pressure have typified Rios’ style inside of the ring, and also played a big role in why he was able to land the biggest fight of his career despite coming off of his first professional defeat.

Rios (31-1-1, 23 KO’s) was bested over twelve rounds on March 30th, inside of the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, in a rematch with Denver’s Mike Alvarado, who he had stopped in seven exhilarating rounds just five months prior.

Despite the setback, Rios gave a solid account of himself and never stopped pressing the issue.

After some down time where he soaked in the disappointment of that night, Rios’ spirits are now revived as he is lined up for a November 24th clash with eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.
