Freddie and Manny...

By Chris Robinson

During a recent swing through the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, I caught up with trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. to follow up on a BoxingScene.com report from Ryan Burton about the trainer’s possible involvement in a new boxing reality series that will likely be launching early next year.

When asked about what his role on the new series might pertain, Mayweather Sr. was quite vague, but did hint that he may find himself competing against other well-known trainers in the sport.

The concept sounds similar to the “Contender” series that launched on NBC in 2005, and while discussing the new project, Mayweather Sr. couldn’t help but praise his own abilities as a teacher.

Then, out of nowhere, Mayweather Sr. took a big swipe at another one of today’s more revered trainers.

Former two-division world champion and current day trainer Roger Mayweather will be quick to tell you that he isn’t overly-impressed with today’s core group of star fighters, even admitting that he doesn’t catch a lot of the high-profile bouts that take place.

With that in mind, I was a little surprised when Roger told me that he did make time to watch this weekend’s welterweight title clash between WBO champion Timothy Bradley and Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez.

Facing off inside of the Thomas & Mack Center in an HBO pay per view encounter, Bradley scored a mild upset by being a little busier and out-slicking Marquez over twelve rounds.

Roger wasn’t taken aback by Bradley’s performance but gave him some credit.

Later tonight, inside of the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., undefeated junior welterweight contender Karim Mayfield (17-0-1, 10 KO’s) will face off with journeyman Christopher Fernandez (21-15-1, 13 KO’s) on the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera matchup.

At Friday’s weigh-in, Mayfield made the contracted catch weight limit of 144 pounds and showed off a chiseled physique that was a testament to all the weeks of hard work leading up to his 19th professional bout.

Mayfield was originally lined up to meet tough Mexican Pavel Miranda and gave his best explanation for having to find a late replacement.

“If I’m not mistaken, he didn’t pass some test,” Mayfield said of Miranda. “So they brought in another fighter. Hey, I’m just prepared for whatever comes to me.

Early last month, it was reported that Five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach had elected to remove Alex Ariza from the camp of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao ahead of his Nov. 23 duel with Brandon Rios.

Ariza, the outspoken strength and conditioning coach, had been with Pacquiao dating back to the spring of 2008 following his split-decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez and played a huge role in his rise in weight while collecting additional titles at the lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight divisions.

Roach claimed that Ariza had become a distraction in camp because he was trying to do everyone else’s job and added that “Nobody really gets along with this guy” when we spoke at the Pacquiao-Rios presser in Los Angeles a few days after news broke of the rift.

Never one to bite his tongue, Ariza took to Twitter on Monday and issued the following.

While a bit of a harsh reality, fighters in the sport of boxing are often judged based off of their last performance.

It is that reason, that despite all of his accolades, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao finds himself in a make or break fight situation with his forthcoming clash with former lightweight titlist Brandon Rios.

Pacquiao-Rios takes place on Nov. 23 from the Venetian Resort in Macau, China in an HBO pay per view showcase that figures to deliver with excitement.

Over the past few weeks, trainer Freddie Roach was able to reconnect with his star fighter Manny Pacquiao during a seven-city international press tour ahead of the Filipino icon’s forthcoming clash with Brandon Rios.

Roach was ringside inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this past December when Pacquiao was knocked out in brutal fashion from a picturesque right hand delivered by Juan Manuel Marquez in the sixth round of their welterweight encounter.

So chilling was Pacquiao’s knockout loss, that everyone seems to be wondering how the 34-year old will recover.

We will find out when Pacquiao faces Rios in Macau, China on Nov. 23 and Roach insists he still sees the Manny of old when around his fighter and friend.

“Well, he’s still playing basketball,” Roach would quip when asked of Pacquiao’s recent demeanor. “He’s still pretty good at that. He’s a great guy, as always. I see no changes in Manny at all.”
