In the wake of any notable boxing event, you will be sure to find your share of contrasting, bold opinions about what transpired.
Not many expected Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Marcos Maidana to be as thrilling and physical of a fight as it was, and it has left the sport curious as to what the future holds for the 37-year old, five-division world champion.
Catching up with Mayweather’s father and co-trainer Floyd Sr. recently at the Mayweather Boxing Club, he had plenty to get off his chest.
Read below for Sr.’s thoughts on Maidana’s tactics vs. Floyd, a possible rematch, and Amir Khan’s performance vs. Luis Collazo on the undercard.
Reacting to his son’s victory over Marcos Maidana…
“I think it was a superb masterful boxer fighting with an MMA fighter. He hit him in the balls. He hit him on the hips. He hit him in the back of the head. Was butting his eye. Maidana don’t deserve nothing. With all that stuff that Maidana did, hitting below the belt, twisting the arm, hitting behind. If I was Floyd I wouldn’t fight him again.”
Interacting in between rounds…
“I was concerned because Floyd was telling me he couldn’t see. Because of the head butt.”
Floyd brawling with Marcos Maidana…
“But he don’t need to be doing that. This is the first time he ever did this type of thing. If I would have had him, Floyd would have countered him a lot more. Plus, another thing. He did real good when he got out and walked around and he was [hitting] the guy with some shots.”
His view of the fight…
“I’m on the outside looking in and you can see more when you’re outside than when you’re in the fight. I got a chance to see a lot more than Floyd did.”
Opposing a rematch with Maidana…
“I don’t think he should fight Maidana. That fight is not even worth it man. Anytime a guy is going to bust you in the head, he going to hit you with a knee, he going to hit you below the belt, he going to twist your arm; you don’t need to fight nobody like that. You’re not fighting a guy that is fair and the referee is not fair either, because he’s not taking no points from the man. I’m not saying nothing is wrong with Mr. Weeks, but that night it wasn’t right.”
Not impressed by Amir Khan’s victory over Luis Collazo…
“Amir Khan looked like some sh*t. The way he would throw his punches, everything thing. Amir Khan aint nothing man. I’ll fight Amir Khan. Anybody can box Collazo. You can box Collazo. If he fought [Floyd] the way he fought Collazo, he would get the hell whooped out of him.”
A feeling that Floyd would do better vs. Khan than Maidana…
“He would definitely fight with him better. That’s the kind of guy you’re going to see Floyd be at his best. Somebody like Khan.”
Concern for his son…
“I’m just saying, we didn’t say that the [Maidana rematch] couldn’t be made, but I’m telling you what I see and what I don’t like. Damn what all the other people see. All them other folks, they don’t give a damn. They just want to see a good fight. That’s my son. I’m concerned about his well-being, his health, everything.”
