After months of speculation, the boxing world finally was confirmed with news that Floyd Mayweather will be facing off with Argentina’s Marcos Maidana on May 3.
The announcement came on Monday, the same day that Mayweather celebrated his 37th birthday, and people have since been speculating about what the pay per view showdown means to the sport’s premier fighter.
Catching up with Mayweather’s longtime trainer and former two-division world champion Roger inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club recently, he seemed to feel that the public had a say in Maidana landing the match over Britain’s Amir Khan.
“I think that’s what the people wanted to see,” Roger explained. “People wanted to see what he could do with Maidana so I guess we’re going to find out.”
Given his relentless and pressing style, Maidana will figure to bring some sort of excitement into the ring with him.
But at the end of the day, Roger feels that Floyd is simply on another level, and has curiosity as to whether Maidana will even finish the match.
“Too much skill for him,” said Roger. “I think he’ll probably stop him. It probably aint going to be early but I believe he’ll stop him though.”

Jeff Mayweather expects Tim Bradley to be full of confidence heading into his rematch with Pacquiao

As he heads into the lone rematch of his career, an April 12 assignment in Las Vegas vs. Manny Pacquiao, WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley appears to be as brash as ever.
Bradley scored two uplifting victories in 2013, netting a narrow decision over Ruslan Provodnikov in March in a wild fight and coming back seven months later to edge Juan Manuel Marquez over twelve tense and tactical rounds.
And while the Pacquiao rematch presents a completely different kind of puzzle, Bradley seems upbeat for the chance to set the record straight following his controversial split-decision victory in the first meeting nearly two years ago.
“Tim Bradley, his confidence has gotten a lot higher than it was the first time after beating Marquez,” stated trainer Jeff Mayweather when asked about the fight recently during our conversation in Las Vegas.
“Well I just feel that Bradley is going to have more confidence than last time,” Mayweather added. “I don’t know if there’s anything either one of them can do different.”
Mayweather was adamant following Bradley’s victory over Pacquiao that the wrong man had been given the decision. And while he still maintains that belief, he knows fully well that two years can change things.
“I feel like the first fight that Pacquiao actually won,” Mayweather stated. “He didn’t get it. But Tim’s going to have a lot more confidence. And in the last fight he did twist his ankle pretty good.”
And while not quite being able to pinpoint why Bradley will have a different outlook heading into the second duel, Mayweather just expects a different fighter in two months.
“It seems to me like Tim is getting a little better,” Mayweather said. “He showed he can use angles and box a little bit. I just think he’s going to do better.”

Roger Mayweather pays his respect to Manny Pacquiao as dangerous rematch with Bradley nears

It’s been well-documented that WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley doesn’t feel Manny Pacquiao is the same fighter who he faced in June of 2012.
On April 12, inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Bradley will face Pacquiao in a crucial rematch an effort to erase the bad taste that was left following his controversial split-decision victory from their first encounter.
Bradley insists that Pacquiao is lacking the killer instinct that has typified his Hall of Fame career.
Pacquiao was stopped in less than six rounds by Juan Manuel Marquez in December of 2012 and Bradley’s belief is that the Filipino star fought an overly-calculated match at times during his lopsided points victory over Brandon Rios this past November.
Speaking with trainer and former two-division titlist Roger Mayweather about the Pacquiao-Bradley rematch, he shared his insight on Manny’s mindset heading in.
“The thing with boxing, like anything else, if you get knocked out, to a degree you’re going to be cautious,” Mayweather stated. “Because the fact of it is they don’t want to get hit and have it happen again.”
Mayweather was stopped on a handful of occasions during a career that saw him capture titles at 130 and 140 pounds and he always found a way to get back on the horse and keep pushing forward.
Asked how he found the mental fortitude within to keep things moving, Mayweather insists that he put his focus on what was in front of him.
“I don’t put that in my mind to say ‘Well, I’m going to get knocked out again’,” Mayweather explained. “It doesn’t matter if I’ve been knocked out or not, I’ve got to find out ‘Can that mother*cker whip me?’ That’s the key about boxing.”
And with a fight as dangerous as the Bradley rematch nearing for Pacquiao, Roger found it fit to do something he hasn’t always done by giving his respect to the Filipino star.
“I think he’ll be back,” said Mayweather. “I think he’s done a hell of a job for his career.”
