As I had noted recently, former champion Jean Pascal made his second visit to Las Vegas this year in an ongoing effort to continue sharpening his skills as he enters the veteran stage of his career.

While the 30-year-old Pascal was originally slated for a May 25th HBO-televised rematch against Chad Dawson in his adopted hometown of Quebec, Canada, news later hit that former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute may instead be next in line.

Catching up with Dawson recently, the sport’s reigning WBC light heavyweight champion spoke on the possibility of seeing a second encounter with Pascal, the first man to defeat him, slip away.

Trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad’s stable of quality fighters continues to grow, as the former light heavyweight champion is now working with Philadelphia’s Mike Jones.

Jones’ talent has always been evident, and in teaming up with Muhammad he will be looking to bounce back from his only professional setback this past June when he was stopped in the 11th round by Randall Bailey in a clash for the vacant IBF welterweight strap.

As is often the case with Muhammad, he was contacted unexpectedly by Jones a few days ago and seems intrigued by the thought of helping rebuild his career.

On Saturday night, inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, featherweight prospect/contender Gary Russell Jr. kept his unbeaten record intact, winning a dominant 10-round decision over Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev.

Russell’s speed and crisp punching easily carried the day for him, as the 24-yar old Washington, D.C. native now eyes bigger bounty at 126 pounds.

Shortly after the fight, I reached out to recently-crowned WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia, who offered up his assessment of Russell’s performance.

The next opponent for former WBA junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana appears to be set, as an intriguing match with Riverside’s Josesito Lopez looks to be a go for June 8th in Carson, California at the Home Depot Center.

Still less than two months removed from the biggest victory of his career and WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia already seems to be eager for another big fight.

On January 19th in New York, Garcia was scintillating as he dropped then champion Orlando Salido four times on his way towards a technical decision victory after eight heats. The fight went to the scorecards early, as a ringside physician deemed that a broken nose from Garcia courtesy of an accidental head butt from Salido left him in no shape to continue.

I caught up with Garcia recently to discuss some action taking place near his weight class, including his thoughts on matches with Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa in particular.

BRON bron

By Chris Robinson

The Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas is never short on colorful characters and brash lightweight champion Adrien Broner seems to fit right in with the hustle and bustle of one of boxing’s liveliest gyms.

It remains to be seen how long Broner will be hanging around, but he seems to enjoying himself while putting in a little bit of work and also watching his proclaimed ‘big brother’ Floyd Mayweather prepare for his May 4th match with Robert Guerrero at the nearby MGM Grand.

Broner made the first successful defense of his belt this past month when he stopped a courageous Gavin Rees after the fifth round in their clash in Atlantic City. Broner dished out plenty of punishment yet Rees proved himself to be resilient in the face of an uphill battle against one of the sport’s more promising talents.

Asked how he felt just a few weeks removed from his most recent showcase, Broner took a minute to reflect.

Now training out of the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, the 30-year-old Pascal admits that a change was in order and couldn’t resist the temptation of making a temporary home in the fight capital the world with a move from his bases in Quebec, Canada.

Fitting in well with a gym chalked full of talent, Pascal admits that he is unsure whom his next official trainer will be, yet he has been seen putting in work with both Roger Mayweather and his older brother Floyd in the past few days.
