Moments ago, inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez won a split-decision victory over Erislandy Lara in a very close, tough fight.

With the victory, Canelo moves to 44-1-1 with 31 knockouts while Lara drops to 19-2-2 with 12 knockouts.

Canelo came out with aggression but Lara made things difficult with his tricky southpaw style.

Canelo had success digging to Lara’s body while the Cuban stalwart was at his best moving and picking his spots against his younger foe.

A quick look ahead to the 2014 Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame introduction in Las Vegas

Former Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield has confirmed that he will be present for his induction into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame on Aug. 9.

Joining the “Real Deal” will be 17 other inductees for the Second Annual NVBHOF Induction Ceremony and Dinner, including his former rival George Foreman, and the great Roberto Duran, amongst others.

The gala will be held this year inside of the Cohiba Ballroom in New Tropicana, Las Vegas. Expect much more in-depth coverage ahead of the induction.

Vince Parra leads Maurice Hooker back into battle at Fantasy Springs

This weekend, much of the focus in the boxing world is going to be geared towards Las Vegas, as the intriguing Erislandy Lara vs. Canelo Alvarez clash takes center stage at the MGM Grand on Saturday night.

And while the matchup is a fine one, later tonight, nearly 300 miles away in Indio, Calif., a noteworthy prospect will look for another step forward.

Dallas’ Maurice Hooker (13-0-2, 9 KO’s) will fight for the first time from the Fantasy Springs Casino when he faces Mexico’s Lauro Alcantar 8-2 (1 KO) in a junior welterweight attraction.

I have been fortunate enough to cover Hooker for a few of his recent training camps out in Las Vegas with his trainer Vince Parra.
