Sources close to the information have informed HustleBoss.com that former three-division champion Abner Mares has suffered an injury while in training that has subsequently seen his rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez pushed back to March 15th from the original date of February 15th.

Mares was training for the rematch in Mexico City but our source claims that he suffered a rib injury during training.

Gonzalez pulled off one of the year’s biggest upsets last August when he stopped the heavily-favored Mares in one round.

Jean Pascal talks Manny Pacquiao vs. Marcos Maidana, Mayweather’s Instagram taunts, and the promotional cold war

The past week I’ve had a chance to interact with and cover former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal in his training camp in Big Bear, Calif. as he prepares for his Jan. 18 HBO date against Lucian Bute.

A Haitian native now residing in Canada, Pascal is an affable soul and also a bit of a free spirit.

The conversations have varied, from his personal views on life to any and all topics in the sport of boxing.

I asked Jean for his thoughts on the future of Manny Pacquiao following his unanimous decision victory over Brandon Rios last month in Macau, China.

Specifically, I wanted to know who Pascal thinks the Filipino icon should face next, or at least in the very near future.

“Honestly, it will be a great matchup; Pacquiao vs. [Marcos] Maidana,” Pascal noted, mentioning the Argentinean power puncher. “Everybody is saying Maidana vs. Garcia, Maidana against Floyd; but Maidana vs. Pacquiao, two guys who like to throw punches, offensive fighters. That would be a hell of a fight I think.”

Such a match would certainly produce fireworks but the reality is that Pacquiao is promoted by Top Rank and Maidana is with Golden Boy Promotions, two promotional powerhouses who simply aren’t working with one another at the moment.

Pascal, like many others, feels the cold war is hurting the sport.

“That fight between Bob Arum, Top Rank, Golden Boy, Showtime, HBO; that’s not good for the sport man,” Pascal explained. “But that’s not in my hands. I cannot do anything about it. But you guys, the fans, can do something about it. You have to tell those guys ‘You’re hurting the sport.’

“It’s not good,” Pascal continued. “I think there’s enough money for everybody in the game. Let’s put the ego aside and please the fans. Because at the end of the day it’s all about the fans.”

There are some fans and insiders who haven’t given up on the thought of Pacquiao facing off with five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather seems less than interested at the moment, however, as he has even been taking some personal shots at Pacquiao on his personal Instagram page. Mayweather’s taunts have caused quite a backlash but Pascal feels it is all in good fun.

“Guys, we have one life to live,” Pascal noted. “We need to stop taking everything seriously. Floyd likes to crack jokes. I like to crack jokes too. That’s not serious. [It’s] just to entertain people.

“And it works,” Pascal added. “Because it makes you talk, makes you do video on those things, people talk about it and stuff like that. It’s just to entertain people, make people have fun.”

Angel Heredia affirms that Juan Manuel Marquez has no interest in a fifth Pacquiao fight but says Provodnikov is possible

By Chris Robinson

During my recent swing through Big Bear, Calif., I caught up with strength and conditioning coach Angel Heredia, as he is presently assisting his client, former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, ahead of his Jan. 18 date on HBO against Lucian Bute.

Heredia made a splash in the sport in late 2011 when it was revealed that he was assisting Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez ahead of his third meeting with Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

Marquez fought an excellent battle against Pacquiao in their trilogy match, losing a close majority-decision that many felt he won, and he returned to stop his Filipino foil in chilling fashion in their fourth encounter a year later.

Marquez is presently eyeing his future following a bitter split-decision loss to Tim Bradley on Oct. 12.

Asked for any insight into his charge’s future, Heredia is adamant that another melee with Bradley is on Marquez’s agenda.

“I spoke to him a couple days ago,” Heredia stated. “He said that he doesn’t know yet who he’s going to fight. He’s waiting on Bob Arum; I think he wants a rematch with Bradley. Whether Bradley was going to give it to him, I don’t know. I’m still waiting too.”

Arum, Marquez’s co-promoter, would love to match Marquez up with Pacquiao for a fifth time but Heredia affirmed that such a scenario isn’t exactly tempting to Juan.

“He told me he’s comfortable with the KO and he’s going to go home and remember it for the rest of his life,” Heredia explained. “I asked him if it’s a possibility that a fifth fight might go and he said ‘To be honest with you Angel, I think that chapter is closed now.’”

Heredia did add that if Marquez can get the rematch with Bradley, that he will eye a couple of tune-up fights in Mexico before retiring officially.

One name that Heredia isn’t completely ruling out is WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov, who Marquez appears to be at least mildly-interested in at this point.

“He mentioned that to me as another option too,” said Heredia. “But it depends where they fight. He doesn’t want to fight in Vegas anymore. It could be Mexico, it could be San Antonio, Texas, it could be Florida. Who knows.”
