On Thursday afternoon, Mares could be found inside of Dodgers Stadium to throw out the ceremonial first pitch as part of Viva Los Dodgers.

Mares (31-2-1, 15 KO’s) appreciates being around the public so close to his fight date, which he insists he will be ready for. Santa Cruz defeated Mares via majority decision in August of 2015 in a fast-paced fight and the rematch is something Mares has always wanted.

According to a report Salvador Rodriguez at BoxingScene.com, former three-division champion Abner Mares appears to be moving away from a heavily-anticipated rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

As we first reported, Mares pulled out of his scheduled Feb. 15 rematch with Gonzalez after suffering a rib injury while sparring down in Mexico City.

While it looked like the rematch was going to be pushed back just a month, it now appears that Mares may land on Floyd Mayweather’s pay per view return on May 3 in Las Vegas.
