Four-time world champion Abner Mares is inching closer to his June 9 rematch with three-division world champion Leo Santa Cruz, who he meets inside of the Staples Center in a fight that will be aired by SHOWTIME. On Thursday afternoon, Mares could be found inside of Dodgers Stadium to throw out the ceremonial first pitch as part of Viva Los Dodgers.

Mares (31-2-1, 15 KO’s) appreciates being around the public so close to his fight date, which he insists he will be ready for. Santa Cruz defeated Mares via majority decision in August of 2015 in a fast-paced fight and the rematch is something Mares has always wanted.

On Saturday night, Dec. 10, Abner Mares stamped another mark in his legacy by defeating former champion Jesus Cuellar over twelve rounds inside of the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Mares has won belts in three weight classes and again now in the featherweight division he is a champion, as he adds the WBA featherweight crown to his collection.

Mares (30-2-1, 15 KO’s) used his skills and boxing ability in the face of Cuellar (28-2, 21 KO’s) , who appeared to be the bigger and physically stronger fighter inside of the ropes.

In what may be the most definitive fight to date on the “Premier Boxing Champions” series, the ESPN-televised affair had plenty to offer its fans. Mares came out of the gates swinging but it was Santa Cruz who settled down and boxed a masterful fight from the fourth round on.

On Tuesday afternoon, I caught up with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum inside of the main lobby of the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While Arum was anticipating the grand arrival of his latest signee, former two-time gold medalist Zou Shiming from China, he took a few moments to address the latest developments with another one of his star fighters, Nonito Donaire.

Donaire is presently eyeing an April return to the ring, with reports having either a clash with WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux or a rematch with former titlist Vic Darchinyan on tap.

There has been plenty of confusion taking place in the camp of Rigondeaux, from his issues with Miami-based Caribe Promotions to the Cuban bringing in the services of trainer Pedro Diaz at the expense of his former coach Jorge Rubio.

“That will be decided by the end of the week,” Arum said when discussing the situation. “We have made an offer to Rigondeaux and we’re waiting to see if he accepts.”
