There were several mixed opinions in the air following Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s controversial ten-round decision over Brian Vera on Saturday night.

Inside of the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., Chavez would see scorecards of 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94 favor him, yet the tallies didn’t do justice to just how persistent and determined Vera was during their HBO showdown.

Sharing his thoughts after the action, Tim Bradley, the sport’s reigning WBO welterweight champion, seemed to side with Vera’s activity over Chavez’s power punches.

“I thought it was an interesting fight, man,” Bradley stated. “I thought [Vera] was the busier fighter. I thought he won the early rounds, some of the end rounds. But I thought that Chavez definitely landed the harder punches. He hurt him in numerous rounds with good shots.

On Thursday afternoon, esteemed trainer Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain could be found inside of the Indio Boys and Girls Club in the Coachella Valley of California.

Beristain was within reach of his longtime pupil and former two-division champion Rafael Marquez, whom he has reconnected with as he heads into a pivotal clash on Saturday night against Efrain Esquivias at the nearby Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.

After a few moments of discussing some aspects of the Marquez-Esquivias bout, I asked Beristain for a few updates on the training camp of Rafael’s older brother Juan Manuel down in Mexico City.

Juan Manuel is prepping for an Oct. 12 encounter with formidable WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley, who ironically trains out of the same facility that Beristain was present in on Thursday.

Speaking through Golden Boy Promotions PR Director Ramiro Gonzales, Beristain highlighted his charge’s physical state of being pristine despite the fight with Bradley still over a month away.

As the Oct. 12 Tim Bradley-Juan Manuel Marquez pay per view showdown approaches us, there is some noticeable tension in the air.

A visibly discouraged Bradley spoke on his concerns with me earlier this month pertaining to the drug testing protocols that are being used in advance of the bout.

While initially seeking to have either VADA or USADA drug testing enforced, Bradley was thrown for a loop when he discovered that his promoter and Top Rank CEO Bob Arum instead had plans of using a third party agency in cooperation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission to oversee the testing.

Bradley initially mentioned that he would consider walking away from the fight if VADA or USADA weren’t involved, citing his contract that stated either party needed to be used in conjunction with the fight.

Finally, Bradley would put the issue aside, as he instead turned his focus solely towards his preparation for Marquez.

Despite being more than ready to dive into a full-fledged training camp in order to prepare himself for battle against one of Mexico’s finest prizefighters, you can sense that Bradley isn’t completely confident in how the situation is being handled.

In a BoxingScene.com article from Bill Emes on Wednesday, Top Rank CEO Bob Arum insisted that the drug-testing issues surrounding the Oct. 12 welterweight title bout between WBO champion Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez have been resolved.

Bradley has been claiming that either VADA or USADA needed to be  involved for the fight to push forward, and later threatened to pull out of the contest if that wasn’t the case.

Word spread that Arum was looking at bringing in a third party to handle the testing, along with the cooperation of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and confusion ensued.

Speaking with Emes, Arum claimed the matter had been sorted out.

“Everything is fine,” said Arum. “The Nevada Commission is running the tests. They are taking extensive tests. They started it [on Tuesday]. Everything is in order. The tests will be just as or even more extensive than USADA or VADA. You have to understand that these are the same tests. These organizations may evaluate them differently but the tests are the tests.”

A quick stop by Bradley’s training base in Indio, Calif., where he has begun ardently prepping for Marquez, shed light into how the defending champion is dealing with all of the drama.
