On Saturday night, Palm Springs native Tim Bradley produced perhaps the most complete performance of his career in defeating Juan Manuel Marquez over twelve tense rounds.
After the final bell sounded, two tallies ready 116-112 and 115-113 favored Bradley, granting him the split-decision victory over Marquez, who also received a 115-113 nod.
Throughout the fight, Bradley showed great reflexes, a quick jab, and excellent movement with his legs. Marquez landed the occasional blow to get the crowd into the fight, but ultimately the Mexico City star simply failed to get into enough of an offensive rhythm that would have turned the tide of the fight.
At the post-fight press conference, Marquez’s longtime trainer Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain seemed gracious when speaking to the press. Continue reading →

On Thursday afternoon, esteemed trainer Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain could be found inside of the Indio Boys and Girls Club in the Coachella Valley of California.
Beristain was within reach of his longtime pupil and former two-division champion Rafael Marquez, whom he has reconnected with as he heads into a pivotal clash on Saturday night against Efrain Esquivias at the nearby Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
After a few moments of discussing some aspects of the Marquez-Esquivias bout, I asked Beristain for a few updates on the training camp of Rafael’s older brother Juan Manuel down in Mexico City.
Juan Manuel is prepping for an Oct. 12 encounter with formidable WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley, who ironically trains out of the same facility that Beristain was present in on Thursday.
Speaking through Golden Boy Promotions PR Director Ramiro Gonzales, Beristain highlighted his charge’s physical state of being pristine despite the fight with Bradley still over a month away. Continue reading →

While many eyes were fixated upon the action between Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios this past Saturday night in Las Vegas, it’s safe to say that very few people could have had as vested of an interest in the fight as did trainer and former contender Joel Diaz.
Watching Alvarado overcome a rocky start on his way towards a decision victory in his rematch with Rios, Diaz surely knows that either man could very well find themselves in the ring with his star fighter, Timothy Bradley, in the near future.
The buzz on Bradley is at a peak, as he is still soaking up the aftermath that came from his grueling points victory over Ruslan Provodnikov just two weekends back.
With the dust from Rios-Alvarado II settling, Diaz is getting a clearer picture of what the forthcoming moves may be for Bradley and he seems eager, showing particular interest in a match with Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez. Continue reading →
