Floyd Mayweather Sr. has been a very busy man this year.

On top of reconnecting with his son Floyd as both a trainer and father, the elder Mayweather runs a busy schedule with a core group of professional fighters that consists of talented lightweights Mickey Bey and Lydell Rhodes, recently-debuted cruiserweight prospect Andrew Tabiti, and aspiring female prospect Maricela Cornejo.

With his son having beat Robert Guerrero convincingly this past May over twelve rounds, Mayweather Sr. now finds himself helping Floyd prepare for a huge clash with Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who he meets on Showtime pay per view on September 14th at the MGM Grand.

With so much of his time and thought devoted to his role as a trainer, Mayweather Sr. admits that it’s been hard to keep track of anything else boxing-related outside of his duties in the gym.

“I try to, but over these last months I’ve been very busy, man,” Mayweather Sr. stated. “I’ve moving here, I’m going there. A lot of things, man. It’s been kind of difficult for me to keep my eyes on things. I try my best to look at as much boxing as I can.”

On November 23rd, a welterweight clash will take place in Macau, China as former titlists Brandon Rios and Manny Pacquiao face off.

The night of Friday, July 19 will likely be stuck in Mickey Bey’s head for quite a while.

Facing off with the always-rugged John Molina Jr. inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Bey had boxed an excellent fight over the course of nine and a half rounds before a barrage of punches from Molina had him in trouble.

Despite still standing on his feet, referee Vic Drakulich would jump in to stop the fight with a little over a minute remaining, granting Molina with the improbable comeback victory while Bey was dealt his first defeat.

In the post-fight aftermath, a frustrated Bey expressed his displeasure with both Drakulich’s officiating throughout the contest as well as his opinion of what he felt was a premature stoppage.

Speaking with Bey’s trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. after the match, he too expressed his frustration but was unsure whether or not Drakulich reacted too fast in granting Molina with the TKO victory.

By all accounts it appears that Floyd Mayweather will begin training on Monday, July 15, in Las Vegas ahead of his huge showdown with fellow champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

That has been the word all week inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club and a recent conversation with Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. seemed to confirm the chatter.

“My understanding is it’s going to be Monday,” Floyd Sr. said during some down time at the gym. “Everything should be taking off pretty soon.”

Having reconnected with his son ahead of his May 4 victory over Robert Guerrero, Mayweather Sr. again has high spirits heading into the September 14 match with Alvarez.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. says that he saw ‘no fear’ in his son during his face off with Saul Alvarez

Mayweather ...

By Chris Robinson

This past Tuesday, in Los Angeles, the final press conference for the September 14th clash between champions Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was held.

After a whirlwind tour that saw the two men visit ten cities, Mayweather and Alvarez would engage in final face off in front of thousands of rabid fans at L.A. Live before going their separate ways.

Locking eyes for three tense minutes, neither man wanted to give an inch as the crowd cheered them on.

Days later, inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, I caught up with Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. and showed him a video of his son’s stare down with Alvarez.

Curious for his reaction, I had to wait a minute as Mayweather Sr. smiled while the clip played.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. can’t see Paulie Malignaggi doing ‘too much of anything’ with Adrien Broner

Later tonight, inside of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in Showtime-televised attraction, WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) will look to defend his crown against one of the flashiest and brashest faces in the sport when he tangles with Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s).

Despite moving up two weight classes for the fight, Broner, a former champion at 130 and 135 pounds, is an overwhelming favorite heading into the match due to various factors.

Asked for his assessment of the contest, renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. seemed to agree with the odds.

“I can’t see Paulie Malignaggi doing too much of anything,” Mayweather told me recently. “He’s going to go in there [and] the only thing I could see him doing, I could see him running. I could see him running for a while, and that’s about it.”

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that outspoken trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. has a tremendous amount of confidence in his son Floyd heading into his Sept. 14 clash with junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez.

On the heels of his masterful display against Robert Guerrero last month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the 36-year old Mayweather is roughly a 2 ½ to 1 betting favorite to emerge victorious against the 22-year old “Canelo”.

The Guerrero triumph was notably special for Mayweather Sr., as it went hand in hand with his return to Floyd’s corner as his trainer. So too did the Mayweathers reconnect on an emotional level outside of the ring after some well-documented disagreements in the past.

‘He’s not an elite fighter’ – Mayweather Sr. not impressed by Lucas Matthysse; reveals how Floyd beats him

In the wake of his 3rd round TKO over Lamont Peterson this past weekend, Lucas Matthysse’s stock is as high as ever.

The WBC interim champion in the junior welterweight division, Matthysse overwhelmed Peterson, the IBF belt holder, with his power. The rugged Argentinean would score three knockdowns in as many rounds, forcing referee Steve Smoger to wave off the contest inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Matthysse has been linked to a possible fight in September with WBA/WBC champion Danny Garcia, yet there are some who are curious how he would do against the sport’s premier fighter, Floyd Mayweather.

On May 4th, Mayweather would successfully defend his WBC welterweight title against Robert Guerrero inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Showing tremendous movement with his feet and impeccable timing, Mayweather was as sterling as ever, winning a commanding unanimous decision over twelve rounds.

With the intrigue of a Mayweather-Matthysse fight slowly growing, I felt the need to ask Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. for his breakdown of such a fight.
