During the first part of my interview with Brandon Rios, the former lightweight titlist expressed his shock at seeing how his former foe Mike Alvarado was dismantled this past weekend at the hands of Ruslan Provodnikov.

On Saturday night, Oct. 19, inside of the 1STBANK Center in Denver, Colo., Russian brute Ruslan Provodnikov scored the biggest victory of his career in outlasting hometown favorite and former WBO junior welterweight titlist Mike Alvarado.

The action was nip and tuck early on, but Provodnikov weathered Alvarado’s thunder and came on in the second half of the fight before scoring two knockdowns in the eighth round.

Provodnikov dished out some more heavy leather in the 10th, as Alvarado elected to stay on his stool in between rounds rather than answer the bell for more punishment.

Calling the fight from ringside for the international feed, longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant gave great praise to new champion.

Following a recent health scare that saw him admitted to a hospital in Las Vegas last month, trainer Jeff Mayweather is back in the mix, as the former IBO junior lightweight champion was spotted inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club this past week.

Asked how it feels to reconnect with his stable of fighters, Mayweather seemed to appreciate simply being able to get back into his daily routine.

“It feels good to be back,” Mayweather confirmed. “I got a chance to train a few of my fighters. That was good. I didn’t really feel weak or anything. I’m looking forward to just getting back to normal. It’s a slow process but I’m happy to be back working.”

As he heads into another high-profile matchup, Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez seems to understand that he will be forever linked to his rival Manny Pacquiao.

Marquez’s match with WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is one of the most anticipated events of the year, as he is set to meet the Palm Springs native inside of the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas in an HBO pay per view showdown on Saturday night.

Marquez’s stock is at an all-time high following his knockout over Pacquiao this past December in their fourth encounter. In another wild fight, Marquez suffered a knockdown of his own and absorbed some big punches before landing a picturesque counter-right hand in the closing seconds of the sixth round to knock Pacquiao unconscious.

Pacquiao is lined up with a Nov. 23 bout with rugged former champion Brandon Rios in Macau, China, but it’s only natural to wonder if Marquez would be intrigued by a fifth fight with the Filipino star given how excellent their previous four contests were.

Asked if he has any interest at all in another meeting with Pacquiao, Marquez seemed a bit disinterested.
