Coming off of a successful outing against Brandon Rios on Nov. 23, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao is slated for an April return to the ring in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao’s unanimous decision victory over Rios last month in Macau, China proved that his heart is still very much in the game following his horrific knockout at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez a year ago.

A recent conversation with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum revealed that there are three names in the mix for Pacquiao’s April return; Marquez, Tim Bradley, and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Bradley won a controversial split-decision over Pacquiao in June of last year. Given the backlash that followed his victory, Richardson feels another close fight could spell bad news for the Palm Springs fighter.

This past Saturday night, trainer Marvin Somodio found himself in perhaps his biggest role as a professional, as he led Ruslan Provodnikov into battle against Mike Alvarado in an HBO attraction that delivered on all fronts.

Inside of the 1STBANK Center in Alvarado’s hometown of Denver, Colo., Provodnikov delivered his finest outing to date in registering a stoppage victory after ten rounds.

With the fight seemingly give and take through the first seven rounds, Provodnikov turned up the heat in the eighth as he twice dropped Alvarado to his knees after two separate barrages of punches. And after a debilitating 10th frame, Alvarado wisely opted to stay on his stool, surrendering the victory to the Russian brute.

When working the corner of Provodnikov, Somodio typically works under head trainer Freddie Roach. But with Roach presently in General Santos City, Philippines aiding Manny Pacquiao ahead of his forthcoming match with Brandon Rios, Somodio found himself in the lead role during the Alvarado fight.

The action was once again brisk last night, as a pair of junior welterweights offered up one of the year’s most dramatic clashes.

Inside of the 1STBANK Center in Denver, Colo., as seen on HBO’s airwaves, Ruslan Provodnikov would capture the WBO belt with a bruising 10th round stoppage over a brave Mike Alvarado.

Provodnikov turned up the heat over the second half of the fight and seemed to have the fight all but locked up after scoring two knockdowns in the eighth round.

Alvarado absorbed some huge shots in the 10th and elected to stay on his stool in between rounds, granting Provodnikov with the stoppage win.

Speaking on the tense action that took place inside of the ring, referee Tony Weeks seemed as if he was still on a bit of a high himself shortly afterwards.

On Saturday night, Oct. 19, inside of the 1STBANK Center in Denver, Colo., Russian brute Ruslan Provodnikov scored the biggest victory of his career in outlasting hometown favorite and former WBO junior welterweight titlist Mike Alvarado.

The action was nip and tuck early on, but Provodnikov weathered Alvarado’s thunder and came on in the second half of the fight before scoring two knockdowns in the eighth round.

Provodnikov dished out some more heavy leather in the 10th, as Alvarado elected to stay on his stool in between rounds rather than answer the bell for more punishment.

Calling the fight from ringside for the international feed, longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant gave great praise to new champion.
