It was about two years ago now that trainer Robert Garcia received word that one of his star fighters, Argentina’s Marcos Maidana, would be a big underdog heading into a matchup with three-division world champion Adrien Broner in San Antonio, Tex.
Maidana would end up having a great camp down in Oxnard, Calif., for that match, ultimately scoring a big upset that led to a pair of fights with Floyd Mayweather. As for Broner, he has since bounced back with 3 decision victories over Carlos Molina, Emmanuel Taylor, and John Molina Jr.
Broner (30-1, 22 KO’s) now finds himself in a high-stakes collision with former IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter, and Garcia reflected back to the Maidana fight when assessing this one.
Garcia recalls that Maidana told him that Broner hits harder and is stronger than Floyd Mayweather, perhaps reason enough for him to give the edge to the Cincinnati native as the matchup nears.
