This weekend in Las Vegas, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao will square off with WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas inside of the T-Mobile Arena in a FOX pay per view attraction.

Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KO’s) and Ugas (26-4, 12 KO’s) make for an interesting pairing. Pacquiao was set to face off with IBF/WBC champion Errol Spence Jr., but the Filipino icon saw the match fall through after the Dallas native suffered a torn retina and had to withdraw. Ugas was scheduled to fight on the undercard against Fabian Maidana, and was subsequently shifted to the main event.

This Saturday night, from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev., emerging light heavyweight prospect Oleksandr Gvozdyk will put his undefeated record on the line against veteran Tommy Karpency.

Gvozdyk (10-0, 8 KO’s) is a native of the Ukraine and if he is to get by Karpency (26-5-1, 15 KO’s) this weekend, there should be big things in store for him.

On Friday night, May 13, inside of the Sam’s Town Casino & Gambling Hall, cruiserweight contender Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti secured the biggest victory over his career in out-pointing New Jersey’s Keith “Machine Gun” Tapia over 10 rounds to claim the NABF title.

Sitting ringside during the bout was Tabiti’s promoter Floyd Mayweather. And while it’s not surprising to see the retired pound-for-pound king around the scene and supporting his fighters, it was the two men who were flanking Mayweather who caught our attention.

Shawn Porter was Shawn Porter on Saturday night.

Inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., the 27-year old came away with a big victory over Adrien Broner after 12 rough and awkward rounds. Porter simply showed himself to be too determined, conditioned, and poised throughout the match, capturing the verdict on all three scorecards by tallies of 118-108, 115-111, and 114-112.

It was about two years ago now that trainer Robert Garcia received word that one of his star fighters, Argentina’s Marcos Maidana, would be a big underdog heading into a matchup with three-division world champion Adrien Broner in San Antonio, Tex.

Maidana would end up having a great camp down in Oxnard, Calif., for that match, ultimately scoring a big upset that led to a pair of fights with Floyd Mayweather. As for Broner, he has since bounced back with 3 decision victories over Carlos Molina, Emmanuel Taylor, and John Molina Jr.

For revered trainer Robert Garcia, he knows all too well the difficulty of preparing for a match with either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao, the two men regarded as the best of this generation.

Garcia led Marcos Maidana into battle twice last year vs. Manyweather, as the Argentinean lost decision verdicts to the Grand Rapids native in May and September despite spirited efforts. And in November of 2013, Garcia was in the corner of Brandon Rios in Macau, China as Pacquiao won a whitewash decision against the former lightweight titlist.

Last night, from the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Wash., interim WBA featherweight champion Jesus “El Jinte” Cuellar (26-1, 20 KO’s) won his ninth in a row by stopping Mexico’s Ruben Tamayo (23-5-4, 17 KO’s) in the fifth round. The bout was part of a four-fight Showtime Extreme telecast.

“I’m happy with my performance tonight,’’ said Cuellar, who is one of the busiest fighters in his division. “My team and I worked very hard in training camp and it showed. I corrected mistakes from my last fight. Sometimes, I get too anxious in there and I come out too strong. I feel that this time I was a little bit more patient.”
