The boxing world was hit with big news on Monday afternoon, as it was revealed that former Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has stepped down from the company. In a statement issued to various outlets, Schaefer stated the following.

“After more than ten years with Golden Boy, it is time to move on to the next chapter of my career. This decision has required a great deal of personal reflection, but ultimately I concluded that I have no choice but to leave. I have succeeded in banking and I have succeeded in boxing, and I look forward to the next opportunity. I am proud to remain a shareholder, so I have a strong interest in the continued success of the company. I am proud of what we have accomplished at Golden Boy, but I now look forward to new challenges.”

Following the HBO Latino double header from the Tropicana Hotel and Casino on Saturday night in Las Vegas, I ran into budding lightweight pugilist Lydell Rhodes as I was making my exit.

Rhodes (20-0, 9 KO’s) is as affable guy as you will find in the sport and he recently enjoyed a bump in notoriety following the buzz that came from serving as Manny Pacquiao’s chief sparring partner ahead of his April 12 rematch vs. Tim Bradley.

During his time in camp with Pacquiao, Rhodes developed a strong bond with the Filipino star’s trainer Freddie Roach and revealed to me that he has decided to bring him on as a head trainer.

Exclusive photos: Trainer Kenny Ellis makes the moves back West

Exclusive photos from Las Vegas as former super middleweight contender and current day trainer Kenny Ellis works with a core group of fighters at Barry’s Boxing, including Domonique Dolton, Delen Parsley, Lamar Russ, and Cecil McCalla.

Ellis had been working closely with trianer John David Jackson down in the South Florida area yet he knew it was time to make a move closer to his roots near Seattle, Wash.

“I’m originally from the West Coast and to be brutally honest I was ready to come back home and be closer to my family and friends,” stated Ellis. “Plus I’m a grandfather now so I’m very excited about establishing a relationship with my granddaughter and being closer to my children Damon & Demetrius.”

Ellis technically is residing in nearby Phoenix and notes that a trip to Vegas is only a “40-minute flight for me.”

Ellis carved out  a respectable 35-7-3 record with 24 knockouts during his 17-plus years as a professional but seems to prefer the role of spreading his wealth onto the next generation of pugilists.

“What I bring to the table is over 30 years of experience,” Ellis revealed. “My boxing pedigree and knowledge comes from everybody from Eddie Futch to John David Jackson, Greg Haugen and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. It runs deep. I’m a true student of this game from six years old to the present day.”

Stay tuned for more updates.
