In the wake of his 3rd round TKO over Lamont Peterson this past weekend, Lucas Matthysse’s stock is as high as ever.

The WBC interim champion in the junior welterweight division, Matthysse overwhelmed Peterson, the IBF belt holder, with his power. The rugged Argentinean would score three knockdowns in as many rounds, forcing referee Steve Smoger to wave off the contest inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Matthysse has been linked to a possible fight in September with WBA/WBC champion Danny Garcia, yet there are some who are curious how he would do against the sport’s premier fighter, Floyd Mayweather.

On May 4th, Mayweather would successfully defend his WBC welterweight title against Robert Guerrero inside of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Showing tremendous movement with his feet and impeccable timing, Mayweather was as sterling as ever, winning a commanding unanimous decision over twelve rounds.

With the intrigue of a Mayweather-Matthysse fight slowly growing, I felt the need to ask Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. for his breakdown of such a fight.

According to a report from Ben Thompson of FightHype.com this past week, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is considering the addition of a new strength and conditioning coach to his team ahead of his September return to the ring.

Alvarez is coming off of his biggest win as a professional on April 20th, as he defeated a very determined Austin Trout over twelve competitive rounds inside of the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Despite the victory, Alvarez seemed to slow down over the second half of the fight, with his work rate noticeably dipping.

One of the men said to be in consideration by Alvarez is the controversial Angel Heredia, who confirmed the reports.

“I’ve been getting a lot of calls from several people in Mexico,” Heredia would tell me recently. “But they didn’t specify exactly what the whole situation was. At this point, yeah, I’m assuming that he’s looking for a conditioning coach. I know that people from Mexico have been calling me and have been leaving a few messages, but nothing concrete.”

On the undercard, welterweight contender Shawn Porter (21-0-1, 14 KO’s) looked sharp in outhustling and outclassing Canada’s Phil Lo Greco (25-1, 14 KO’s) over ten rounds. Porter was too fast for Lo Greco, as a knockdown in the tenth round put a stamp on his performance.

Having come across as gentleman of the sport over the years, it’s not surprising to expect a lack of pre-fight drama or theatrics to be coming from IBF junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse, the division’s WBC interim champion, ahead of their pivotal match later tonight.

Peterson faces Matthysse inside of the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in a Showtime-televised attraction that will change the landscape of the junior welterweight class, this despite the fight taking place at a catch weight of 141 pounds.

While speaking to various members of the media ahead of his 34th professional bout, Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) seemed to dismiss the notion that he had to be weary of Matthysse’s brute punching power.
