Tony and Berto

By Chris Robinson

Throughout his eight-year professional career, Winter Haven, Florida’s Andre Berto has undeniably accomplished a lot. Having twice held portions of the welterweight championship, Berto graced HBO’s airwaves on numerous occasions while earning some very healthy paydays along the way.

There’s also no questioning the importance that trainer Tony Morgan played in helping guide Berto towards becoming a top-level prizefighter. Having met Berto when he was just ten years old and still fresh into the sport, Morgan and his pupil enjoyed quite the ride and seemed to have the recipe for success under any and all situations.

However, on the heels of his upset defeat at the hands of Robert Guerrero this past November, Berto decided to make some changes with his team, as it was announced in late February that he and Morgan were parting ways.

And while Berto has since resurfaced and found his place amongst Northern California-based Virgil Hunter’s growing stable, Morgan is still left with a feeling of bemusement at how his relationship with a man he considered to be practically his son has changed.

Mickey Bey was a man with a lot to get off his chest this past Monday.

On February 2nd, Bey, a lightweight contender (19-0-1, 9 KO’s) fighting out of Las Vegas, made an emphatic ring return following a 15-month layoff in halting Robert Rodriguez in under three rounds inside of the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino.

On February 19th, it was reported by various outlets that Bey had failed a pre-fight drug test, as he was found to have high levels of testosterone in his system. Bey’s testosterone to epitestosterone ratio was marked at 30-1, far greater than the 6-1 allowed by Nevada.

rhodes vs. don moore

By Chris Robinson

The buzz for Floyd Mayweather’s May 4 bout with Robert Guerrero is starting to pick up more and more as the days pass.

Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO’s), the WBC champion at 147 pounds, faces off with Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s), the division’s interim WBC titlist, inside of the MGM Grand in a Showtime pay per view attraction that will serve as one of the year’s biggest events.

There is talk of a fight card taking place one night prior in the city as well, likely at the nearby Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

One fight that was originally discussed for that card would have pitted a pair of undefeated lightweight prospects against one another in ‘Dangerous’ Don Moore (16-0, 10 KO’s) and Haskell ‘Lydell’ Rhodes (14-0, 7 KO’s).
