The buzz for Floyd Mayweather’s May 4 bout with Robert Guerrero is starting to pick up more and more as the days pass.
Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO’s), the WBC champion at 147 pounds, faces off with Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s), the division’s interim WBC titlist, inside of the MGM Grand in a Showtime pay per view attraction that will serve as one of the year’s biggest events.
There is talk of a fight card taking place one night prior in the city as well, likely at the nearby Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
One fight that was originally discussed for that card would have pitted a pair of undefeated lightweight prospects against one another in ‘Dangerous’ Don Moore (16-0, 10 KO’s) and Haskell ‘Lydell’ Rhodes (14-0, 7 KO’s).
What’s interesting about that pairing is that Moore is trained by former two-division champion Roger Mayweather while Rhodes works under the guidance of Roger’s older brother Floyd Sr. Moore and Roger train exclusively out of the Mayweather Boxing Club while Rhodes and Floyd Sr. have also been putting in work in the same gym in recent weeks.
While there isn’t any real trash talk taking place, Moore recently caught word that Rhodes had issued a challenge and he immediately accepted.
The fight would see the Mayweather brothers in opposite corners of one another and anyone familiar with the two fighters knows that it would also be an interesting matchup on its own regardless of any subplots.
Don’t expect such a clash to happen on May 3, however, as the two men will likely meet later in the year in a card that may be solely a Mayweather Promotions bill.
“We’re definitely fighting,” Rhodes told me on Sunday evening. “I just don’t know when.”
Stay tuned for more.
