Mickey Bey was a man with a lot to get off his chest this past Monday.

On February 2nd, Bey, a lightweight contender (19-0-1, 9 KO’s) fighting out of Las Vegas, made an emphatic ring return following a 15-month layoff in halting Robert Rodriguez in under three rounds inside of the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino.

On February 19th, it was reported by various outlets that Bey had failed a pre-fight drug test, as he was found to have high levels of testosterone in his system. Bey’s testosterone to epitestosterone ratio was marked at 30-1, far greater than the 6-1 allowed by Nevada.

On March 20th, the Nevada State Athletic Commission voted 3-2 to fine him $1,000 of his $8,000 purse while also suspending him for three months.

Bey could have lost his entire purse while being suspended for a year, but the ruling was lessened because he had documentation showing that he had advised his physician ahead of time that he wasn’t supposed to take any kind of performance-enhancing drugs prior to his fight.

Throughout the ordeal, Bey has maintained his innocence and shared his side of the story with me following a workout with his trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. yesterday afternoon.

Read below for highlights from my conversation with Bey, where he revealed how the situation spiraled out of control while also eyeing his future.

Wanting people to understand…
“Do you know how they ruled it? That’s what nobody put out, that I won the ruling. And I want people to understand, that suspension wasn’t a gift. We got all the documents from the doctors and it clearly states in their handwriting that I told them ‘I’m a fighter and I take a drug test and I can’t take anything that’s a PED or a banned substance’. That was written in the documents, which we had at the hearing. So, the facts are laid out in their hand-writing.”

The public comparing Bey’s suspension to that of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who was fined $900,000 and suspended for ( ) months for testing positive for marijuana following his unanimous decision loss to Sergio Martinez…
“For anybody to think ‘Why did Chavez get [his suspension] and he didn’t get that, it’s two separate [situations]. I like Chavez, I hate that he got any kind of fine. That’s how Nevada ruled it. But my thing was different. I don’t think people clearly understand the facts. I did all the right things when I went in there. They said it was in writing and they chose to do otherwise. Whose fault is that?”

Taking precaution…
“Everybody knows. You saw me in the gym, how I was out for weeks and weeks. The fact of the matter is, when I went, I clearly stated. And I don’t believe in medicine and all of that crap. When I did go, I clearly stated to them that any kind of medication or anything, that they had to write that down. It was a good thing that I took precaution, because who knows, I could have got thrown under the bus had I not told them that. But I told them that and they done it anyways. At the hearing they said it was the doctor’s fault. They couldn’t have punished me like people think. But nobody understands that. Nobody knew that was said at the hearing.”

A bad error on the doctor’s part…
“I was sick for like a month or two, but I have a history of being sick. Everybody knows that. That’s why I didn’t get a gold medal. I caught pneumonia and couldn’t compete in the Olympics. But like I said, the doctor made a bad error. I don’t go to doctors. That’s what everybody knows. I’ve got a history of having a broken hand and never got a surgery or none of that, for the specific reason that I didn’t want them putting all that oxycodone, vicodin and all that medication in me because I don’t believe in that.”

Bey’s doctor disagreeing with the test result…
“My thing is, of course they are going to disagree with the test, but they said ‘[That] was not right’ and this and that. But the thing is, they are supposed to know what they are doing as doctors. They should know what they’re doing. Obviously, whether they felt they were wrong or right, it all fell on me. It made my levels go up but they said ‘Oh their urine test is wrong’. Because they were saying ‘On our test, you’re still here’. They basically were saying their test was wrong.”

Whether Bey felt that the testosterone helped him perform at a higher level…
“Not at all. I felt worse. The doctor was at the commission. So, all of these people talking like ‘Oh, it’s 30:1’, I would have never known if it was 1:1, 2:1. I’ve never even heard of a 10:1; what is that? Anybody that seen me in the gym, there wasn’t no abnormal, crazy stuff going on. The thing is, when that happened, I felt worse in the fight.”

Having no real advantages…
“This is the crazy thing, the doctor said he didn’t have one advantage. Because they were like ‘If he was trying to cheat, he would have had to do it longer, not the week of the fight, to keep his immune system stronger’. They said that I didn’t have a power advantage or a strength advantage at all. They said the only advantage he could have had was stamina. But the fight was two and a half rounds. So, they were like ‘He didn’t have any advantages’.”

Having anger that his name was connected to this recent scandal…
“Oh, highly. I’ve never taken a drink, I don’t take Tylenol. To go from that to that, I was just furious. If somebody was cheating, they would have done stuff on their own. But how could a doctor not know what they are doing? That was where I was pissed off and course for my name to be linked to that. But people got to understand that they did the hearing, Nevada did what they were supposed to do, and we had the facts there. And I did everything I was supposed to do by telling them that and being responsible. And it was a good thing I told them that, because if I hadn’t told them that, who knows what would have happened.”

Regrouping and eyeing the future…
“You know, it’s going to be some big stuff. Everybody is excited to see me back in the ring. And everybody should be, because I’m going to be back in the zone and put on another show and do what I always did.”
