Not much has been heard from former multi-division champion Nonito Donaire following his unanimous decision loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux in April.
Facing off with the slick Cuban inside of the Radio City Music Hall in New York, Donaire had trouble figuring out Rigondeaux’s southpaw style and was a dealt his first defeat in over 12 years.
Having had a successful shoulder surgery weeks later and with his wife Rachel expected to give birth to the couple’s first child any day now, Donaire’s spirits are again upbeat as he eyes a rematch later this year with Armenia’s Vic Darchinyan in an effort to get his career back on track.
“I feel good man,” Donaire told me as we spoke inside of the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas on Friday night during ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights” telecast.

That has been the word all week inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club and a recent conversation with Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. seemed to confirm the chatter.
“My understanding is it’s going to be Monday,” Floyd Sr. said during some down time at the gym. “Everything should be taking off pretty soon.”
Having reconnected with his son ahead of his May 4 victory over Robert Guerrero, Mayweather Sr. again has high spirits heading into the September 14 match with Alvarez.

On Friday night, July 12, junior featherweight prospect Chris Avalos picked up a crucial win for his career as he overcame a spirited effort from former interim title challenger Drian Francisco inside of the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After ten rounds of action, two 97-93 scorecards and a 96-94 tally favored the 23-year old Avalos, who sees his record improve to 22-2 with 16 knockouts. Francisco falls to 24-2-1 with 19 stoppages.
Avalos admitted after his victory that he started slower than he would have liked, but he built momentum from the third round on and appeared to edge several of the late rounds. The action was brisk, but Avalos appeared to do more damage and he had success going to Francisco’s body.
With his only two losses being split-decision verdicts to San Diego’s Chris Martin and current IBF champion Jonathan Romero, Avalos is again upbeat about his career and claims to be ready for a title shot of his own.

This past Tuesday, in Los Angeles, the final press conference for the September 14th clash between champions Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was held.
After a whirlwind tour that saw the two men visit ten cities, Mayweather and Alvarez would engage in final face off in front of thousands of rabid fans at L.A. Live before going their separate ways.
Locking eyes for three tense minutes, neither man wanted to give an inch as the crowd cheered them on.
Days later, inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, I caught up with Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. and showed him a video of his son’s stare down with Alvarez.
Curious for his reaction, I had to wait a minute as Mayweather Sr. smiled while the clip played.
