PHOTOS: Jamel Herring Makes Dream Come True With Title-Winning Victory Over Masayuki Ito

Former U.S. Olympian and Marine Corps veteran Jamel Herring pulled off a tremendous upset last night in defeating former champion Masayuki Ito over 12 rounds. The victory took place in front of a sold-out crowd (2,912 spectators) at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, FL, with ESPN televising.

“Semper Fi” Herring is now the WBO junior lightweight champ, while “The Judge” Ito will have to cope with his second career defeat. Herring (20-2, 10 KOs) prevailed by scores of 116-112 and 118-110 twice, while also fulfilling his dream on Memorial Day weekend in front of a host of active and reserve U.S. Marines.

Later tonight, from the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, WBO junior lightweight champion Masayuki Ito will defend his title vs. twice-beaten contender Jamel Herring. The Ito vs. Herring fight is an interesting matchup in style and the winner will have a plethora of options moving forward against possibly the likes of lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko, WBC junior lightweight champion Miguel Berchelt, and others.

On Friday afternoon, Ito (25-1-1, 13 KO’s) weighed 129.4 lbs. compared to Herring (19-2, 10 KO’s), who hit the scale at 129.6 lbs. Each man appears to have put themselves through a rigorous training camp to be in such pristine shape. Everything will go down tomorrow night on ESPN.

On Saturday night, we witnessed the return of IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev, who stopped hard-hitting contender Radivoje “Hot Rod” Kalajdzic in the fifth round in front of 10,105 spectators at Stockton Arena. With the victory, Beterbiev (14-0, 14 KO’s) defended his title for a second time and is now eyeing unification matches.

“I worked very hard for this fight,” Beterbiev stated. “I went 100 percent in the gym. Maybe one day I’ll show my boxing skills. I want unification fights. It doesn’t matter who it is. I am happy to be working with Top Rank and ESPN.”

On Friday afternoon, WBA/WBC/lineal middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and IBF middleweight champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs made weight ahead of their unification showdown. Canelo (51-1-2, 35 KO’s) and Jacobs (35-2, 29 KO’s) will meet inside of the T-Mobile Arena, with the fight airing exclusively on DAZN.

This is by far one of the biggest fights of 2019 and you could sense the emotions at the weigh-in. Jacobs hit the scale weighing 160 pounds while Canelo came in at 159.5 pounds. Each man looks to be in pristine shape for a fight that will no doubt be challenging on many fronts.

On Wednesday afternoon, WBA/WBC/lineal middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) and IBF middleweight champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) hosted a final press conference ahead of their unification showdown. Alvarez vs. Jacobs will air exclusively on DAZN and take place from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

“Look, we’re just ready for Saturday,” stated Alvarez. “I’ll repeat to you, I’m ready. I’m ready to continue writing history like I always have. I’m a fighter that’s fought all the styles. What he brings on Saturday night is going to bring the reaction out of me to counter whatever he brings.”
