WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is a few weeks into his latest training camp inside of the Summit Gym in Big Bear, Calif. ahead of his Nov. 2 HBO clash with Curtis Stevens.
While the fight with the ultra-confident Stevens figures to deliver fireworks, much of the talk surrounding Golovkin seems to center around his potential list of opponents, as anyone between 154 and 168 pounds with credentials seems to be of interest to his team.
Last week in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather offered up a virtuoso performance over twelve rounds in thoroughly outclassing then junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Always one to keep up with the boxing schedule, Golovkin spoke on Mayweather’s latest showcase.
“Yeah, I saw,” Golovkin affirmed. “It was a good fight. Floyd is very good. He’s a good boxer; he’s a good fighter.”
Following his 3rd round knockout over Matthew Macklin in late June, Golovkin expressed interest in a fight with Mayweather, even going as far as to label it a dream fight.
But with a fight of his own already on the horizon, Golovkin seemed to downplay any discussions concerning him and Floyd.
“I don’t have any idea,” Golovkin explained. “I’m not interested in [that] right now. My attention right is at middleweight right now, for Stevens. It’s a big fight in the future.”
Stevens has already kept the lead up to his fight with Golovkin interesting with all of his bravado. At times, Golovkin had even seemed to let Stevens’ antics ruffle his feathers just a little bit, but he again seems to be focused on the task at hand.
“This is a regular fight,” Golovkin said. “Ok, he’s strong, but for me it’s just a regular fight. I want this fight.”
It was recently announced that WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward will defend his title on Nov. 16 in an HBO attraction against unbeaten and talented Edwin Rodriguez.
When assessing the contest, Golovkin showed definite curiosity.
“Oh, this is a good fight,” stated the modest Kazakhstan native. “Seriously, this is a big interest for me.”
Golovkin is hungry for a super fight that would help elevate his status in the sport and feels the winner of Ward-Rodriguez just may be it.
“I think next year, maybe,” said Golovkin.
