Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana II will be on several big screens come Sept. 13

Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana’s rematch on September 13, 2014 has attracted enough hype that the match will be playing in movie theaters around the United States, courtesy of Fathom Events.

The match continues to garner more interest than the original fight, very much due to Maidana’s ability to stay in the mix in their first meeting. And while the betting lines favor Mayweather, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that this rare Mayweather rematch will be well worth watching.

Fans have Maidana to thank for such an intriguing first contest between the two welterweights. The Argentinian threw 858 punches at Mayweather, connecting on 26 percent of his shots. That constant pressure makes for a very watchable affair, as it visibly took “Money” a few rounds to get comfortable with the pace Maidana was bringing.

For Mayweather’s part, this is a rare opportunity to be featured in a rematch against a fighter who likely produced his best possible outcome in a decision loss that was scored 117-111, 116-112, 114-114. Now that he’s seen Maidana’s tenacious fighting style, there should be less surprises for the 46-0 Mayweather.

What’s more, Mayweather seems confident as ever. At the press conference for this event, Mayweather offered to bet the value of Maidana’s purse on the fight.

The key for Maidana will be to once again control the pace and movement of the fight. In their first fight, Maidana kept Mayweather on the ropes, and used his substantial weight advantage to push Floyd around.

While Mayweather will certainly be preparing for exactly this approach, it’s also the strategy that got Maidana where he is now; challenging the best fighter in his weight class to his first rematch in over a decade in a fight that will be watched by millions around the world, including many thousands on the big screen.
