On Wednesday afternoon, WBA/WBC/lineal middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) and IBF middleweight champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) hosted a final press conference ahead of their unification showdown. Alvarez vs. Jacobs will air exclusively on DAZN and take place from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

“Look, we’re just ready for Saturday,” stated Alvarez. “I’ll repeat to you, I’m ready. I’m ready to continue writing history like I always have. I’m a fighter that’s fought all the styles. What he brings on Saturday night is going to bring the reaction out of me to counter whatever he brings.”

On Saturday night, with the vacant WBA lightweight title on the line, former two-division champion Rances Barthelemy and former IBF lightweight champion Robert Easter Jr. fought to an uneventful split-draw verdict. The bout aired on SHOWTIME from the Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The fight was largely void of any real action, with scorecards reading 115-113 Barthelemy, 115-113 Easter, and 114-114.

On Saturday night, April 20, WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford successfully defended his title for a second time with a sixth round TKO over former champion Amir Khan. The fight, which took place on ESPN pay per view from Madison Square Garden in New York, may not have ended how Crawford wanted or expected, but his perfect record and lofty goals are still intact.

Crawford dropped Khan in the first round and had a commanding lead midway through. In frame six, an accidental low blow from Crawford put Khan down, with the British star and his corner electing not to continue, granting the champion with a TKO victory.

We are inching closer to boxing’s next significant showdown, as WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford will face off with former world champion Amir Khan on Saturday night from Madison Square Garden in New York. While Crawford (34-0, 25 KO’s) is understandably a huge favorite heading into the fight, Khan (33-4, 20 KO’s) does have enough experience, speed, and skills to at least make the ESPN pay per view matchup interesting.

During Wednesday’s final press conference, Crawford revealed that this is far from just an ordinary showcase for him.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum was eyeing IBF champion Richard Commey for this date, but the rugged Ghanaian injured his right hand in his title-winning second round knockout over Isa Chaniev on February 2, eliminating him as an option.

Will Tiger Roll Remain on a Roll at the Grand National?

Tiger Roll enters this year’s Grand National as not only the defending champion, but also as this year’s Cheltenham Glenfarclas Chase winner. The past 12 months have seen the Irish Thoroughbred win three of his four races, the only loss came at the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in November.

Will Errol Spence Jr. and Shawn Porter Collide Later This Year?

Errol Spence Jr.’s stock is as high as ever following his commanding unanimous decision victory over Mikey Garcia last month in Arlington, Texas. Fighting on FOX pay per view, Spence had little trouble in handling the four-division world champion from Riverside, CA in front of over 47,000 fans inside of the AT&T Stadium. After 12 rounds, scorecards reading 120-108 and 120-107 twice saw Spence raise his record to 25-0 (21 KO’s), as well as his overall standing in the sport.

And another fight may be just around the corner. According to Mike Coppinger, Spence very well could be lined up with a September showdown with WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter. It’s a fight that has made sense for a few years now, and the pieces finally appear to be falling into place.

This past Saturday night, inside of the AT&T Stadium just outside of Dallas, TX, IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. made a third successful defense of his title with a commanding 12-round unanimous decision victory over four-division titlist Mikey Garcia on FOX pay per view. Spence was simply too precise, too strong, and too focused to let Garcia get any kind of momentum going as he cruised towards a clear-cut victory.

Scores reading 120-108 twice and 120-107 highlighted just how dominant and in control the 29-year old champion was throughout. Garcia, 31, tried his best to figure Spence out, whether in closed quarters or from a distance, but he simply didn’t have it on this night. Spence moved to 25-0 (21 KO’s) while Garcia suffered his first career blemish, falling to 39-1 (30 KO’s) as he goes back to the drawing board.

On Saturday night, from the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, the boxing world witnessed another closely-contested decision, as WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter overcame a spirited effort from tough Cuban contender Yordenis Ugas to win a split-decision after 12 rounds of action. Scorecards read 117-111 for Ugas and 116-112 and 115-113 for Porter, in a fight that aired on FOX under the Premier Boxing Champions banner.

It was a very tense and tactical affair, with several of the rounds being hard to decipher as far as who should have won the frame. Ugas appeared to be more active in spots and began catching Porter with some telling right hands as the fight wore on. For his part, Porter boxed on his toes more than we are accustomed to seeing him, despite never seeming to mount any kind of offensive attack.

It was quite the scene on Friday afternoon, as WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter shocked many by coming in overweight ahead of his title defense vs. tough contender Yordenis Ugas at their official weigh-in. Porter (29-2-1, 17 KO’s) hit the scales at 148.8 pounds, over by 1.8 pounds, while Ugas (23-3, 11 KO’s) made weight at 146.6 pounds.

Porter was given two hours to re-weigh, and he did just that. After cutting his hair and stripping down to no clothes, Porter finally made weight on the fourth try, coming in at 146.8 pounds. His supporters and his team erupted with relief and celebration, but there is a big task ahead of him tonight in the form of Ugas, who was ripped at the weigh-in.

Former WBA interim heavyweight champion Luis Ortiz notched another victory on Saturday night, but not without some struggle. Ortiz (31-1, 26 KO’s) captured a unanimous decision over Christian Hammer (24-6, 14 KO’s) to keep his name relevant in the heavyweight discussion.

After ten rounds of action, scorecards reading 100-90 and 99-91 twice gave the Cuban heavyweight another important win. But those wide scores weren’t a true indicator of how much grit Hammer showed during the match, as both men were bloodied and bruised at various times during the fight.

On Saturday night, March 2, former junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara and current WBA junior middleweight champion Brian Castano battled to a highly-competitive 12-round split-draw that was extremely hard to score. The action took place on SHOWTIME from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with scorecards reading 115-113 Castano, 115-113 Lara, and 114-114.

Castaño (15-0-1, 11 KOs), was able to outland his opponent (181-103) with power shots, yet Lara (25-3-3, 14 KOs) was the far more effective boxer, as he dictated the pace of the fight while landing 34% of his shots compared to 27% for his Argentinean foe.

At the moment, this is a lot of buzz going on in the heavyweight division. The consensus is that one of three men, WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilderr, IBF/WBA/WBO champion Anthony Joshua, or former lineal champion Tyson Fury, is the one who should be wearing the crown as the true king of the division.

It’s an interesting debate, and in addition to those three names, there are several other top challengers, contenders, and former champions still in the mix. We recently swung through City Boxing Club in Las Vegas, NV to get some discussion going on this topic, and we were pleasantly surprised at the many different responses we received.

The one-sided contest aired on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing, as Davis raised his mark to 21-0 (20 KO’s) while Ruiz fell to 39-5 (32 KO’s).

With his promoter Floyd Mayweather watching from ringside, Davis made quick work of his late-replacement opponent.
