On Saturday night, from the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, the boxing world witnessed another closely-contested decision, as WBC welterweight champion Shawn Porter overcame a spirited effort from tough Cuban contender Yordenis Ugas to win a split-decision after 12 rounds of action. Scorecards read 117-111 for Ugas and 116-112 and 115-113 for Porter, in a fight that aired on FOX under the Premier Boxing Champions banner.
It was a very tense and tactical affair, with several of the rounds being hard to decipher as far as who should have won the frame. Ugas appeared to be more active in spots and began catching Porter with some telling right hands as the fight wore on. For his part, Porter boxed on his toes more than we are accustomed to seeing him, despite never seeming to mount any kind of offensive attack.
