On Tuesday night, perennial pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather set the boxing world on fire when he announced some recent developments pertaining to his May 4th return to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

While WBC interim welterweight titlist Robert Guerrero was looked at as the favorite to land the fight, Mayweather instead suggested that St. Louis’ Devon Alexander may be getting the opportunity.

“The negotiations for my fight are almost done,” Mayweather tweeted. “The front runner is IBF Champion Devon Alexander. It’d be a unification bout at welterweight.”

On Wednesday night, I caught up with trainer Tony Morgan, a man who knows Guerrero very well.

This past November, Morgan led his charge, former champion Andre Berto, into battle against Guerrero inside of the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Despite a valiant effort, Berto was dropped in rounds one and two before losing a twelve-round decision in a grueling bout.

I was curious who Morgan considered a tougher foe for Mayweather, Alexander or Guerrero, and he has no hesitation with his response.

“Devon, by far,” stated Morgan. “Devon’s more talented.”

Asked to elaborate, Morgan took a glaring swipe at Guerrero’s credibility.

“He’s fast, he can box,” said Morgan of Alexander. “Robert’s kind of right there and just throws punches. I can’t dog him, he did what he had to do against [Berto], but at the same time, I truly think Berto should have knocked him out in two or three rounds.”

True enough, Berto was tabbed by many to halt Guerrero’s nearly seven-year unbeaten streak, with many pointing to the fact that Guerrero had been campaigning at 135 pounds just a year and a half before their tussle.

Asked what exactly what wrong for his fighter this past November, Morgan still seems a bit mystified.

“I don’t know,” Morgan stated candidly. “I just think there was a lot on [his] mind. It definitely wasn’t the wrong game plan. It wasn’t really a game plan that was executed. It is what it is and like I said, I don’t make excuses for nothing.

“I take my hat off to Robert, he did his thing,” Morgan added. “But I know Andre Berto. Andre Berto destroys fighters like Robert Guerrero. He didn’t that night; I can’t say nothing about him.

If Guerrero does end up landing his coveted shot against Mayweather, Morgan doesn’t foresee a good ending for the multi-division champion.

“I mean, the guy’s had some good wins but if you look at his overall talent, Floyd’s going to embarrass Robert,” Morgan claimed.
