Abdul Musawwir Muhammed always has a lot of people coming in and out of his barber shop out in Las Vegas.
Located within walking distance of the Mayweather Boxing Club, several local and visiting fighters go to Musawwir’s to get a cut, and even some mitt work on occasion.
We recently caught up with four talented prospects in Kyrone Davis (7-0, 3 KO’s), Emmanuel Taylor (18-4, 12 KO’s), DeLorien Caraway (5-0, 4 KO’s), and Eddie Gomez (18-1, 11 KO’s) inside of the shop. The four men are all very talented in their own right, and are presently serving as sparring partners to three-division world champion Adrien Broner ahead of his June 20 showdown vs. Shawn Porter.
Broner vs. Porter is set to take place inside of the MGM Grand as part of a “Premier Boxing Champions” telecast on NBC and the fight has had the sport talking.
“It’s a great style matchup,” Davis said when asked of the fight. “You’ve got an aggressive power puncher vs. a fast slick boxer-puncher. Whoever brings their A-game, that’s who’s going to win.”
“He’s focused,” Davis added of Broner. “He’s motivated. He brought in some people to help him. Floyd’s been giving him tips on the fight. He’s taking this fight seriously and that’s important. Me, being in camp, they wanted to bring in somebody stronger. I just go out there and try to give him that Shawn Porter look.”
Taylor shared the ring with Broner this past September, losing a competitive 12-round decision, and insists that sparring is very similar.
“I knew him since we were kids,” said Taylor. “The fight was like us sparring. It was excellent work.”
“I think Broner can get him,” Taylor added. “Shawn is kind of reckless.”
For Gomez, he seems right at home dealing with Broner’s brash bravado, and loves the work they’ve had thus far.
“He likes to talk a lot but I’m from New York, I do the same thing,” said Gomez. “But it’s always work when we get in there. We put the work in and at the end of the day we just hug.”
