It’s fight week in Las Vegas, as the boxing world turns its attention to this weekend’s clash between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather and interim champion Robert Guerrero.

Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO’s) faces Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) on Saturday night from the MGM Grand in a Showtime pay per view clash that very well may end up being more entertaining than expected.

One of the subplots heading into the fight has been the addition of Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. into his camp in an effort to add a few more wrinkles to his game.

And despite the always-hectic nature that has come in advance of another big event in the city, I still found time to cross paths with Mayweather Sr. this week to get his thoughts on his son’s next assignment.

During our brief dialogue, I discovered that Mayweather Sr. had gotten a hold of some footage of some previous Guerrero fights and needless to say, he wasn’t too impressed.

“I looked at some videos of Guerrero the other day,” Mayweather Sr. stated.  “He’s not that technical like I thought he was. I seen him fight a couple guys. So far as I can see, he can be hit with right hands easy. Right hands and left hooks right behind it. That, I think, is going to be a terrible thing for him to leave himself in that position. But he aint got no choice.”

In further assessing Guerrero, Mayweather Sr. stated that the 29-year old southpaw from Gilroy, Calif. appears to have certain issues that rise to the surface in the later rounds.

“I noticed when he goes down the stretch, he has a little speed problem,” stated Mayweather Sr. “He has speed when he starts, but when he gets down a few rounds, maybe four or five or something, his arms get real heavy. His punches are a lot slower and he’s easy to hit too.”

Asked if he had a chance to view Guerrero’s most recent outing, a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in a grueling fight this past November, Mayweather Sr. revealed that he has only seen clips of Guerrero from years back.

“These were the older fights,” Mayweather Sr. revealed. “But the only thing I’m going to tell you about the older fights, you’re going to still have something that you had before. The one thing about it I noticed, is the speed. He can’t change that. He can’t make himself get faster than he is already. I see guys that are much slower than my son hit him when they’re ready.”

Asked what would happen if Guerrero were to try and make the contest a physical war of wills much like he did vs. Berto, Floyd Sr. shook his head in disagreement.

“The thing is, it aint going to be that kind of fight,” Mayweather Sr. stated. “I can tell you what kind of fight it’s going to be. Floyd is going to walk some, he’s going to dance a little bit. He doesn’t have a reason to dance, because he’s physically stronger than Guerrero.

“He’s smarter, his hands are faster and this is where he’s working from,” Mayweather Sr. added while tapping his head, an obvious reference to his son’s ring IQ.
