By all accounts it appears that Floyd Mayweather will begin training on Monday, July 15, in Las Vegas ahead of his huge showdown with fellow champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

That has been the word all week inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club and a recent conversation with Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr. seemed to confirm the chatter.

“My understanding is it’s going to be Monday,” Floyd Sr. said during some down time at the gym. “Everything should be taking off pretty soon.”

Having reconnected with his son ahead of his May 4 victory over Robert Guerrero, Mayweather Sr. again has high spirits heading into the September 14 match with Alvarez.

“I’m definitely expecting to win and we’re going to do everything it takes to win,” said Mayweather Sr. “All we’ve got to do is do what we do and what we do is good enough to take care of whatever he’s trying to do.”

The sparring for Floyd will likely begin in at least a few weeks yet Mayweather Sr. seems to already know what his side needs in order to emulate a guy like Alvarez.

“He’s going to need some guys more or less Canelo’s height,” Mayweather Sr. stated. “Guys that are kind of stocky. Just bring pressure, even though Canelo is going to bring pressure. Because, one thing about Floyd, if you come in there with pressure he’s going to see something that he aint never seen before.

“Like I said, we look for Canelo to come and do what he can do but what he can do aint enough,” Floyd Joy added.

Mayweather was relaxed and in complete control during his bout with Guerrero and Floyd Sr. is expecting the same kind of composure when the bell rings to sound the Canelo match.

“As you can see, Floyd was very, very calm when he fought Guerrero,” Mayweather Sr. noted. “I don’t see it being no different with this fight or any other fight. My son has been in this ring for years and years and years now. He’s very comfortable in the ring and he knows what he’s doing.”
