There can be more to meets the eye when you really get to know Marcus Willis.

I’ve been familiar with Willis’ career for several years now and have even crossed paths with him in the past down in Florida, while also being present for one of his biggest victories, when he beat James De La Rosa in Las Vegas in April of 2013.

Having temporarily relocated to Southwest Florida early this year, I began interviewing Willis, a Fort Myers native, out of his family’s gym, Team Willis Boxing and Family Fitness. We discussed several topics, from his sharing the ring as an amateur with the likes of Keith Thurman and Errol Spence, to Thurman’s big fight last month with Manny Pacquiao, to updates on his own personal career.

What I noticed about Willis, was that his business approach reaches further than just that of a fighter. In addition to fighting and running his gym, Willis also trains a variety of fighters himself and is actively promoting his own fitness apparel line, Assassin Fight Gear.

Hustle Boss recently swung through Willis’ gym during another photo shoot for his brand. When asked about how he came up with the Assassin Fight Gear name, Willis broke down his perspective.

“Every day that we get in the gym, as fighters, and even as regular people, you want to go possess the day like it’s the last day,” said Willis. “So, you just want to kill it. I have that assassin mentality, and that’s where the idea came up from.”
