The night of Saturday, Nov. 9 was another showcase for the rising talents of Riverside, Calif. resident Mikey Garcia.

Facing off with former titlist Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez inside of the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Tex., Garcia was dropped by the Puerto Rican in the second round but rose as if nothing had happened.

Garcia then turned the tide of the fight in the following rounds before dominating and eventually finishing off Martinez in the eighth with a powerful left to the body.

There were some key changes for the newly-crowned WBO junior lightweight titlist for this particular camp, as Garcia benefitted from several weeks working with strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza.

As recently reported, former lightweight titlist Brandon Rios has acquired the services of strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza heading into his Nov. 23 clash in Macau, China with Manny Pacquiao.

As outspoken of a figure as you will find in the sport, Rios was actually in a subdued mood on Thursday afternoon prior to another workout as he discussed what it’s been like working with Ariza thus far.

“It’s something different,” Rios revealed. “Different exercises I’ve been doing. It’s tiring. I do get tired. I felt that I’m more tired this time. But, hey, I love to work out and I think it’s going to come out good. That workout is just insane. After that, and coming to the gym; we’ll be ready.”

Prior to his rematch with Mike Alvarado this past March, Rios had been testing the waters with a different strength coach, Angel ‘Memo’ Heredia, a man known best for his work with Juan Manuel Marquez.

Early last month, it was reported that Five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach had elected to remove Alex Ariza from the camp of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao ahead of his Nov. 23 duel with Brandon Rios.

Ariza, the outspoken strength and conditioning coach, had been with Pacquiao dating back to the spring of 2008 following his split-decision victory over Juan Manuel Marquez and played a huge role in his rise in weight while collecting additional titles at the lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight divisions.

Roach claimed that Ariza had become a distraction in camp because he was trying to do everyone else’s job and added that “Nobody really gets along with this guy” when we spoke at the Pacquiao-Rios presser in Los Angeles a few days after news broke of the rift.

Never one to bite his tongue, Ariza took to Twitter on Monday and issued the following.
