Shocking VIDEO: MMA legend Anderson Silva suffers gruesome leg injury in rematch loss to Chris Weidman

As seen on Saturday night, Dec. 28, Chris Weidman successfully retained his UFC middleweight belt in a rematch with one of the sport’s all-time greats, Anderson Silva.

Weidman (11-0) had defeated Silva (33-6) via a shocking knockout five months earlier, so it wasn’t exactly shocking to see him score a victory. But what was so surprising was the fashion in which he claimed a second victory.

In the second round of the match from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Silva threw out a left kick that was subsequently blocked by Weidman. Silva immediately dropped the canvas in pain, as it became evident that he had suffered a broken leg.

Referee Herb Dean waived the bout off seconds later, granting Weidman the victory.

Replays show just how severe the injury was, as the 38-year old Silva’s leg can be seen practically bending in half. It was one of the most gruesome injuries in combat sports history.

The questions now turn to what lies ahead for Silva and if this may very well mark the end of his legendary career.

Whatever happens from here, the Brazilian has left his mark in the sport and should keep his head high.
