Prior to the Andre Ward vs. Edwin Rodriguez official weigh-in inside of the Ontario Airport Hotel in Southern California on Friday afternoon, I shared a few words with Rodriguez’s promoter Lou Dibella.
As the conversation turned to another one of Dibella’s star fighters, middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, I could tell that the dialogue was about to change drastically.
Martinez is still looked at as one of the top fighters in the sport, but he is coming off of less than stellar performance against Martin Murray this past April that saw him hit the canvas before rising to pull out a close unanimous decision victory.
Now 38 years old and dealing with his share of injuries, some insiders feel that the Argentinean’s best days are behind. Meanwhile, WBA titlist Gennady Golovkin has seen his stock skyrocket over the past year with a slew of knockout wins.

Floyd Mayweather once again reminded the boxing world that he is the game’s premier performer by thoroughly outclassing Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez this past weekend in Las Vegas.
Inside of a sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena, Mayweather seemed to effortlessly control the action against his 23-year old foe over the course of twelve rounds. Mayweather did as he pleased on both the offensive and defensive ends before walking out of the building with a majority decision nod as well as his 45th professional victory in as many fights.
There was no one with a better view of the action as Mayweather’s father and trainer Floyd Sr.
Shortly after his son’s triumph, Floyd Sr. shared his thoughts on his performance as well as some dismay towards the 114-114 scorecard issued by judge C.J. Ross.
“I thought he did a beautiful job,” Floyd Sr. stated at the post-fight press conference. “The only thing I didn’t like is that they were talking about a draw. There’s no way in hell that could have been a draw. No way, no means, by any way.

At first glance, trainer Abel Sanchez comes across as one of the more respectful and modest guys that you will meet in boxing.
And while the veteran trainer is indeed a reserved person at times, Sanchez has a way of being completely unabashed with his thoughts on many facets of the sport.
Throughout any given year, Sanchez’s Summit Gym in Southern California’s Big Bear Mountain plays host to a bevy of world-class talent. At the moment, Sanchez is just a few days away from reconnecting with his star fighter, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who is set to hit camp shortly in advance of his Nov. 2 bout with Curtis Stevens.
While Stevens wasn’t the ideal opponent in Sanchez’s mind, the trash-talking and hard-hitting Brooklyn native will surely make for an interesting lead up heading into the eighth defense of Golovkin’s title.
During a recent swing through his facility, I was able to catch up with Sanchez and discuss a few storylines in the sport.
