On Saturday night, June 14, Chris Algieri pulled off a big upset in scoring a split-decision victory over former titlist Ruslan Provodnikov.

Algieri was dropped twice in the first round but showed enough composure and activity afterwards for two of the ringside officials to tab him the winner.

When we last spoke with trainer Marvin Somodio, he was soaking up the aftermath that came from Ruslan Provodnikov’s rousing victory over Mike Alvarado inside of the 1STBANK Center in Denver, Colo.

And after a debilitating 10th frame, Alvarado wisely opted to stay on his stool, surrendering the victory to the Russian brute.

When working the corner of Provodnikov, Somodio typically works under head trainer Freddie Roach. But with Roach presently in General Santos City, Philippines aiding Manny Pacquiao ahead of his forthcoming match with Brandon Rios, Somodio found himself in the lead role during the Alvarado fight.
