On Saturday night, March 18, WBA/WBC/IBF world middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin defeated former world champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs via unanimous decision after twelve rounds inside of Madison Square Garden in New York.

Golovkin (37-0, 33 KO’s) got off to a cautious start through three rounds, but was able to register a knockdown of Jacobs (32-2, 29 KO’s) in the fourth round courtesy of a pair of right hands. Jacobs wasn’t rattled however, as he picked himself up and fought courageously the rest of the match, often troubling Golovkin with movement and sharp-punching in the face of one of boxing’s most dangerous punchers.

As the championship rounds approached, the fight appeared to be on the table, and it was Golovkin who came through with a  big 12th round. Following the final bell, scores of 115-112 twice and 114-113 were read in Golovkin’s favor despite many of those in attendance and watching on television feeling that the Brownsville native did enough to capture the victory.

Both men were classy in the aftermath of the contest, and it could be interesting to see a rematch of such a competitive bout.

K2 Promotions’ Tom Loeffler, who oversees Golovkin, has nothing but praise for Jacobs post-fight. Check the video below for a closer look, including Loeffler’s thoughts on a rematch between the two champions.
