It had been a while since we’ve been in the trenches with top-flight junior welterweight prospect Semajay Thomas.

The Chicago native, now 6-0 with 4 knockouts as a professional, has a great pedigree behind him no matter how you cut it. One of Thomas’ mentors in his amateur days was and still is Nate Jones, the former heavyweight contender who captured bronze in the 1996 Olympics and now stands as one of the game’s emerging young trainers.

As a pro, Thomas spent some great months working down in Houston, Tex. with the respected Ronnie Shields, as he was alongside such talent as the fighting Charlo twins and Erislandy Lara.

A relocation to Las Vegas seems imminent and it has been good catching up with Thomas, who is back in town training inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club out here. Thomas is no stranger to the gym’s ‘Doghouse’ showcases, as he has been spotted working with Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa as well as UK vet and Mayweather Promotions star Ashley Theophane (seen below).

Seems like just yesterday that we first ran into Thomas in Las Vegas and it’s been great to see him progress so much the past three years.

Thomas recently became a father and with advisor Al Haymon guiding his career, you can expect to be seeing plenty of the 22-year old in the future.

Next up for Thomas appears to be an October date back home in Chicago, where he has fought the past four times.

Taking to his personal Facebook page, Thomas updated his fans with the news.

“Its official,” Thomas stated. “Got the call from Al Haymon. My next fight will be October 16 [at the] UIC Pavilion in Chicago! What God has for me no one can take away!”
