On Saturday night, Floyd Mayweather again showed why he is the world’s best fighter by thoroughly outclassing one of the sport’s rising prizefighters, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, over twelve rounds.

In front of a raucous crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather nullified all of Canelo’s weapons with superior counter-punching, airtight defense, and deft movement.

Two scorecards reading 117-111 and 116-112 oversaw a ridiculous 114-114 tally from judge C.J. Ross, granting Mayweather his 45th victory.

Watching the action from ringside, IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander seemed taken aback by Floyd’s performance.

“Man, he was excellent,” Alexander said. “He was on, man. I expected a harder fight. I knew [Alvarez] was young and inexperienced and he hasn’t fought anybody like Floyd. I didn’t know it was going to be that easy.”

Mayweather has already stated that he will return to the ring this coming May 3 and some of his potential opponents seem to be eyeing the date.

Alexander affirmed his interest in such a fight and revealed the type of ingredients that could give Floyd problems.

“You’ve got to think about it,” said Alexander. “Skills is going to be what gives Floyd problems. If you don’t have skills and [aren’t] fast just like him, you’re not going to beat him. You’ve got to have the smarts just like him, the skills just like him, and the defense just like him.”

Alexander then suggested that a change in styles would present Mayweather with a different kind of test.

“Go back and look at it,” Alexander noted. “He don’t fight too many slick southpaws like me anyways. If he did, it would have been a loss.”

First things first, however, as Alexander is still waiting to see if a Dec. 7 fight with former titlist Amir Khan will come to fruition.
