On Tuesday afternoon, former multi-division world champion Nonito ‘Filipino Flash’ Donaire stopped by his trainer Robert Garcia’s personal gym in Oxnard, Calif., to finish up camp ahead of his Nov. 9 rematch with Vic Darchinyan.
Speaking to HustleBoss.com shortly before his workout, the 30-year old Donaire expressed just how motivated he was to again be inside one of the top gyms in the sport as he looks to rebound from his disappointing loss this past April to Cuban marvel Guillermo Rigondeaux.
“It’s always great, man,” said Donaire. “You see all the champions. You see everybody here. This is where you’ve got to be.”
While Donaire was initially spotted inside of the gym late last month, his visit was short-lived, as he would end up heading back to his home base of Las Vegas to do some work with his father, Nonito Donaire Sr.
While it has been well-documented just how estranged the relationship between father and son has been in the past, Donaire claims that they didn’t skip a beating in reforming their bond.
“It was good to reconnect,” Donaire added. “It wasn’t awkward, it wasn’t anything. It’s just like, we’re back together like we never left or never went through all of that.
As far as what he expects from the remainder of camp, Donaire insists that Garcia’s stable of champions and prospects will give him the push he needs.
“Get in shape,” Donaire stated. “These guys are really tough guys. That’s why I want to be here. This is where I want to be.”
Following his interview, Donaire would spar four lively rounds with WBA interim featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar as half of the gym watched on.
Expect more updates from Donaire’s training in the coming days.
