On Saturday night, Oct. 3, inside of the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., Ukraine native Viktor Postol came away with the biggest victory over his career in stopping Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse in the 10th round of their junior welterweight clash.
Matthysse, 33, took the early lead in the HBO-televised contest but it was Postol, 31, who weathered the storm and began controlling the distance and pace of the matchup. Matthysse was always pressing and appeared to rock Postol several times in the seventh round but he simply had trouble dealing with the size and length of his foe.
In the tenth Postol caught Matthysse with a big right hand that sent him to the canvas for the count. Matthysse appeared to be level-headed after the shot but elected to remain on the canvas, sighting an injury to his eye.
With the win, Postol moves to 28-0 with 12 knockouts and is looking for a matchup with WBO champion Terrance Crawford. Matthysse, meanwhile, likely sees a big dance with Manny Pacquiao go to the wayside with this defeat as he falls to 37-4 with 34 knockouts.
