Amir Khan v Lamont Peterson - Weigh In

By Chris Robinson

As the days pass by, it seems more and more likely that an announcement regarding a Floyd Mayweather vs. Amir Khan clash could be just around the corner for May 3 of next year.

Mayweather recently told  reporter David Mayo that he was possibly announcing some big news next week, while Khan has went on record stating that he himself is eyeing a May return with hopes of landing the coveted shot with Floyd.

In all honestly, Khan hasn’t fully restored the luster that was taken from his career following his July 2012 stoppage loss to Danny Garcia, so it should be no surprise that not every fan is embracing this matchup.

Add on the fact that Mayweather is looking as good as ever in the wake of his rout of Saul Alvarez in September, and it’s understandable why he would be such a huge favorite over his potential British foe.

While there is still some definite uncertainty in the air, there seems to a be a strong possibility that British star Amir Khan could land a huge pay per view showdown with Floyd Mayweather sometime next year.

While Mayweather is coming off of another sterling performance in taming Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez over twelve rounds on Sept. 14, Khan has struggled in recent contests.

Stopped by Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia in July of last year, Khan won a stoppage victory over Carlos Molina months later and was dropped and later dazed during his unanimous decision victory over Julio Diaz this past April.

Khan wasn’t overly-impressive in either of his last two fights, leading some to question why he is even being considered as an option for the 36-year old Mayweather at this point.

During a recent swing through the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, Calif., I gathered some opinions on the potential fight amidst the workouts of some talented pugs.

While certainly not being looked at as an ideal matchup to make, there seems to be a very realistic possibility that Floyd Mayweather could be facing off with Amir Khan this coming May.

If such a fight were to come off it would likely be a financial success but Mayweather, the sport’s best fighter at the moment, would be considered a very big betting favorite over Khan, the former champion from Bolton who has looked rather shaky in his recent outings.

Earlier this week I caught up with former two-division titlist Zab Judah in Las Vegas, as he is fresh into his latest training camp ahead of his Dec. 7 clash with fellow Brooklyn native Paulie Malignaggi.

On Monday evening, former world champion Amir Khan made a surprise visit to Fox Sports 1’s airwaves during their latest telecast from the Sports House in Redwood City, Calif.

Khan is presently in Northern California working with his trainer Virgil Hunter as rumors of his future continue to swirl, with the biggest buzz being that of a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather in 2014.

Asked by analyst Barry Tompkins about his next move, Khan claimed that he is in the dark as much as anyone.

“We’re still working on a few things,” Khan stated. “We were looking at a fight against Alexander. That fell through. There’s a lot of talk about the Mayweather fight happening, but at the moment, I’ve left it up to my team and Golden Boy.”
