Having been embedded in the Las Vegas boxing community the past six years, I’ve came across a lot of great talent all over the city.

Beginners, prospects, top contenders, and champions are all over the scene out here but it takes a special kind of person to really captivate the city in the way that Jesus “Chuy” Gutierrez has.

Gutierrez (13-0-1, 4 KO’s) is the former WBC USNBC lightweight champion of the world but it’s always been his connection to Vegas fight fans that has stood out more than anything. 14 of Gutierrez’s first 15 fights took place in Las Vegas and he has always been one to draw a crowd.

Things didn’t go as planned for Gutierrez in his last fight on May 22, as he had to settle for a majority-draw against Angel Hernandez (9-4-1, 5 KO’s) inside of the D Hotel & Casino. Gutierrez was three pounds over the lightweight limit prior to the match and you could tell he just wasn’t himself while inside of the ring.

With a few months having passed, Gutierrez has recently been spotted training inside of Vegas’ new hot spot, City Athletic Boxing. Training alongside his promoter, good friend, and former two-division titlist Zab Judah at nights, Gutierrez has been putting in good work ahead of his latest return.

Gutierrez is set for a Sep. 10 fight in Westbury, New York, as he will be fighting on a card headlined by Judah. And while the Hernandez match may have left a bad taste in his mouth, Gutierrez seems primed to set the record straight.

Check the video below for an all-access look at Gutierrez’s training, including his mitt work with Fareed Samad, and stay tuned for more updates.
