I remember hearing good things about lightweight prospect Dustin Arnold a few years back from one of my friends in the South Florida area and made a point to link up with him recently when he was out in Las Vegas.

Arnold was in town this past week with his trainer, former amateur fighter Jeff Poritz, in search of some work ahead of his Aug. 5 return to the ring in Tampa, Fl. and I was able to follow him a few days and get a sense of how serious he is towards his craft.

On Saturday afternoon, April 29, City Boxing Club  in Las Vegas hosted their official grand opening.

The opening of the gym comes after the opening of the first City Athletic Boxing Gym in West Las Vegas. The new location can be found at 3401 Sammy Davis Jr. Drive, just across from the Fashion Show Mall on the Strip.

On Monday afternoon, Jan. 23, Cuban trainer Ismael Salas oversaw some sparring inside of City Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nev., between some of his chief fighters and other pugilists.

The first sparring to kick off the sessions was a clash of unbeaten featherweight prospects in Cuba’s Leduan Barthelemy (11-0, 6 KO’s), younger brother of former IBF lightweight champion Rances, and Francisco Esparza (5-0, 2 KO’s). Esparza is trained by former junior middleweight world champion Fernando Vargas, who was present at the session, and he has a throwback, aggressive Mexican style that always see him pushing forward.

WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas has officially kicked off his training camp for his Nov. 5 bout vs. eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao, whom he meets inside of the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

Vargas (27-1, 10 KO’s) may be the one holding the title, but he is regarded as the underdog to many against Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 KO’s), who still looks sharp at 37 years old.

Later this year, WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas will collide with IBF titlist Kell Brook in a can’t-miss matchup overseas.

Vargas (27-1, 10 KO’s) is already in training camp, putting in some technical work with his trainer Dewey Cooper and assistant David Hayes. City Athletic Boxing in West Las Vegas is serving as Vargas’ home gym for the Brook assignment, and the intensity will sure build as the matchup draws near.

WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas has agreed to face IBF titlist Kell Brook later this year, likely over the in UK, in one of the year’s bigger showdowns.

Vargas (27-1, 10 KO’s) is riding a new high in his career following a ninth-round TKO over previously undefeated Sadam Ali this past March and the Brook clash is something he has been seeking.

It was a pleasant surprise when I caught former lineal heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman training inside of City Athletic Boxing earlier this month.

Having compiled a 50-9-2 record with 41 knockouts while competing as a professional, Rahman was an entertaining fighter to watch and has faced a long line of formidable champions and contenders during his days in the sport.

This past Saturday in Las Vegas, former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto gave a spirited effort against perennial pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather, ultimately dropping a unanimous decision loss after 12 rounds.

Fighting inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the second time in his career, you could tell that Berto (30-4, 23 KO’s) was in top physical shape as he attempted to break through Mayweather (49-0, 26 KO’s), even making the contest interesting on a few occasions.

Maricela Cornejo is back in town for a brief visit, fresh off of her biggest victory to date as a professional. Cornejo improved her record to 4-1 with 2 knockouts on Aug. 15 when she scored a commanding ten-round unanimous decision over Latashia Burton.

It’s been  a treat watching Ismael Salas work his magic in Las Vegas the past few years.

Salas, a Cuban trainer who used to be known by many for his work with champions Yuriorkis Gamboa and Guillermo Rigondeaux, has really branched out the past few years and currently works with a very strong crop of fighters.
