On Saturday night, inside of the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York, WBO junior lightweight champion Mikey Garcia won a commanding unanimous decision victory over Juan Carlos Burgos.
Now 34-0 with 28 knockouts, Garcia may be heading into a big showdown against Yuriorkis Gamboa later this year.
Former HBO analyst Larry Merchant, who was at the fights in New York calling the action for Top Rank’s international feed, sees Gamboa as the ideal move for Garcia.
“I’d just like to see a good fight,” said Merchant. “I’d like to see if Gamboa wants to fight him.”
Merchant feels that Gamboa may be the ideal test, at the moment, for Garcia as he eyes a run up in weight.
“It’s a good fight for Garcia,” Merchant stated. “Unfortunately there are not a lot of really topflight fighters in the lightweight divisions. Gamboa has a good record and it would be a good fight to see if Garcia could fight in that division and in time maybe even 140.”
