By Chris Robinson

On Friday afternoon, former junior lightweight champion Gervonta Davis and former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa weighed in ahead of their SHOWTIME-televised main event, set for Saturday night from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA.

Davis is the heavy favorite heading into the contest, which will see the two men vying for the vacant WBA lightweight title. But things didn’t exactly go as expected, as the Baltimore native originally came in 136.25 pounds, over a pound over the lightweight limit. Gamboa weighed in at 134.5 pounds.

On Saturday night, in Miami, FL, former world champions Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa won separate bouts to pave the way towards a potential showdown in 2019.

Lopez (36-6, 32 KO’s) dropped Argentina’s Cristian Ruben Mino (19-3, 17 KO’s) four times, as he scored a ten-round unanimous decision. Lopez looked several times like he was going to finish the fight, but his opponent stayed resilient.

On Saturday night, inside of the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York, WBO junior lightweight champion Mikey Garcia won a commanding unanimous decision victory over Juan Carlos Burgos.

Now 34-0 with 28 knockouts, Garcia may be heading into a big showdown against Yuriorkis Gamboa later this year.

Former HBO analyst Larry Merchant, who was at the fights in New York calling the action for Top Rank’s international feed, sees Gamboa as the ideal move for Garcia.

Angel Heredia believes that Manny Pacquiao is a tougher fight for Yuriorkis Gamboa than Mikey Garcia

At the moment, the city of Montreal is buzzing over this weekend’s big showdown between former champions and transplanted residents Jean Pascal and Lucian Bute.

While at Pascal’s open media workout in advance of the HBO clash at the Bell Centre, I crossed paths with his strength and conditioning coach Angel Heredia, who keeps himself busy each year with a bevy of clients that also include Juan Manuel Marquez, Jhonny Gonzalez, and Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Gamboa saw his name thrust into the headlines recently when it was revealed by Michael Koncz that the former featherweight titlist was being considered as a potential foe for Manny Pacquiao’s April return in Las Vegas.

It was puzzling to hear such rumors but Heredia seems open to the match.

“I’m surprised but I think it can happen at 140,” Heredia stated. “I spoke to Gamboa yesterday and he said he’s ready to take on anyone. I just hope that there’s enough boxers that have the courage to confront this great fighter.”

Gamboa had expressed deep interest in a match with junior lightweight champion Mikey Garcia and Heredia was asked whether the Riverside tactician or Pacquiao would be a more difficult test for his charge.

“I think Manny Pacquiao,” Heredia answered. “Because of his speed. He’s accurate, he’s fast. He wants to redeem himself. Mikey Garcia is a great fighter too. He’s very technical, very tricky because he’s very accurate [with] his punches. He’s a good hitter but he’s not as fast. I guess it’s about styles.”

Heredia is no stranger to facing Pacquiao, as he was in camp with Marquez for two of his matches against the Filipino star. The last one, in December of 2012, saw Marquez drill Pacquiao with a counter right hand in the sixth round of another memorable fight.

And perhaps for those reasons Heredia actually would prefer another melee with Manny.

“Frankly I feel more comfortable with Pacquiao, because I know him a little bit better,” stated Heredia.

It should be noted that Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has since denied that Gamboa is in the running to face Pacquiao.

It had been a little while since I had touched base with longtime HBO analyst Larry Merchant to discuss the sweet science in depth.

No longer announcing fights for HBO and having recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, Merchant has been enjoying his newfound free time very well it seems. As one would guess, Merchant still has great enthusiasm for the boxing game and is always open to discussing anything related to the sport.

Calling up Merchant recently, we discussed some recent storylines, including WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s bout with Gavin Rees tonight in Atlantic City, his thoughts on junior welterweight brute Lucas Matthysse, the issues with performance-enhancing drugs in the sport of boxing, and why he would have preferred to see junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire face Abner Mares instead of Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Ismael Salas on training Jorge Linares, Donaire vs. Rigondeaux, and why he feels Yuriorkis Gamboa is a clean fighter

IMG_2221

By Chris Robinson

After catching up with Ismael Salas this past weekend in Las Vegas during Lucas Matthysse’s knockout victory over Mike Dallas Jr. inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, I made a point to swing through and check out the Cuban trainer in camp with his latest pupil, Jorge Linares.

Overseeing the two-division world champion inside of the Long Life Fit Gym on Wednesday afternoon, Salas seems enthused by the prospect of trying to resurrect Linares’ career.

Undoubtedly one of the game’s finer talents, Linares suffered a pair of bloody and debilitating TKO defeats to Antonio DeMarco and Sergio Thompson in October of 2011 and March of 2012 that left his career hanging with serious questions.

During our conversation after their training, Salas spoke on his first ten days working with Linares while also taking time to speak on two of his former charges, WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and former featherweight titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Joel Diaz wants his brother Julio to face Amir Khan; plus thoughts on Yuriorkis Gamboa’s PED scandal and Tim Bradley’s return

IMG_9530

By Chris Robinson

On Tuesday afternoon, I caught up with Indio, Calif.-based trainer Joel Diaz.

Known best for his work with WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley, Diaz actually reached out to make mention of his younger brother Julio. Last month in Los Angeles, Julio defied the odds in going tooth and nail against undefeated Shawn Porter, eventually settling for split-draw verdict after ten brisk rounds.

Having held portions of the lightweight championship on two separate occasions in the past, the 33-year-old Julio had been written off by many but showed poise, vigor, and fortitude in pushing Porter to the limit.

Joel would love nothing more than to see his brother face off with British star Amir Khan, who is actively pursuing a suitable opponent for his April 20th return.
