It was short but explosive.

On Saturday night, from within the Minute Maid Park in Houston, Tex., Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO’s) stopped rugged James Kirkland (32-2, 28 KO’s) in under three violent rounds.

It was a wild night in Houston, Texas, as Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez dispatched a brave but outgunned James Kirkland in under three rounds inside of the Minute Maid Park.

With the win, the Guadalajara, Mexico native moves to 45-1-1 with 32 knockouts while Kirkland suffers the second stoppage loss of his career, falling to 32-2 with 28 knockouts.

On Thursday afternoon, in ┬áHouston, Texas, the final press conference ahead of this weekend’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. James Kirkland showdown, set for Saturday night on HBO, took place.

Our guy Sergio Venegas was on hand as the fighters, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, living legend and former two-division champion Bernard Hopkins, 50 Cent, and others addressed the media.

According to a report from Steve Kim at BoxingScene.com, it looks as though former junior middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez may be facing off with all-action James Kirkland on May 2 in San Antonio inside of the Alamodome.

The fight is on the verge of being finalized, according to sources, and the news is surprising given how much hope people were having on Alvarez meeting up with Miguel Cotto on May 2 before those negotiations fell apart.
