On Tuesday afternoon, interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) played host to the media inside of the IBA Gym in Las Vegas ahead of his May 4 encounter with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand.

And while Guerrero didn’t put forth a full-fledged workout, he instead chose to field more questions from the press as he shadowboxed in the center of the ring towards the end of his media day.

I asked Guerrero for his thoughts on his face off with Mayweather that aired last month. As seen by millions online after the video went viral, Mayweather could be seen verbally taunting Guerrero, obviously looking to get some kind of rise out of him.

Instead, Guerrero simply laughed and brushed off Mayweather’s talk. I asked “The Ghost” why exactly he didn’t get back in Floyd’s face and he gave me his reasoning.

In a fight that flew under the radar, Las Vegas resident Lonnie Smith made a return to the ring last month as he met up with once-beaten Michael Perez on the Bernard Hopkins-Tavoris Cloud undercard from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

This was a crucial fight for Smith, as he was coming off of back-to-back losses to Vicente Escobedo in March of last year and to Mason Menard three months later.

And despite getting dropped by Perez in the second round, Smith showed much fortitude, rising and eventually working his way back into the fight. Several ringside accounts had Smith in control of the action in the seventh round before the fight was stopped after a clash of heads caused a nasty cut on Perez’s forehead.

The bout went to the cards, where the fight was declared a majority draw, with Smith’s ledger shifting to 14-4-3 with 10 knockouts.

And despite not getting the victory he so craved, you can tell that Smith again has his spirits back as he eyes a run in the lightweight division.

As he enters his 44th professional bout, there is again a special kind of aura in the camp of Floyd Mayweather.

Readying himself for a May 4th defense of his WBC welterweight crown against interim champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, Mayweather seems as focused as ever heading into what looks to be the final championship run of his career.

That doesn’t mean that some things in camp haven’t changed, however, as some faces have left the scene while others have reemerged.

For the Guerrero fight, Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. has thus far played an instrumental role in training by simply overseeing his son’s work and offering up his own personal advice and insight while inside of the gym.

For the elder Mayweather, playing such a role is something he doesn’t try to downplay.

On Wednesday, March 6th, BoxingScene.com correspondent Ryan Maquinana showed fans a behind-the-scenes video, courtesy of Showtime Pay-Per-View, of the intense faceoff between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero ahead of their May 4th clash at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the video, Mayweather can be seen taking the offensive, boldly taunting Guerrero, who did his best to brush off Floyd’s verbal assaults as he grinned.

A few hours after the nearly three-minute clip hit the net, I showed Floyd’s trainer and Uncle Roger the video off of my iPhone during some down time from training inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club.

The next opponent for former WBA junior welterweight champion Marcos Maidana appears to be set, as an intriguing match with Riverside’s Josesito Lopez looks to be a go for June 8th in Carson, California at the Home Depot Center.

During a recent swing through the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, I caught up with Maidana on the eve of a light training session and he spoke on the danger of his next assignment.

“Difficult opponent,” Maidana said with respect of Lopez. “Throws a lot of punches, but I am training to come out as a winner.”
